  • SENTENCE PATTERN Sentence A sentence is not just a string of words which are randomly put together. There is a definable set of constituents that combine to make sentences. We have a set of rules which are used to combine these constituents. The nice fact about the structure of a sentence is that we are able to know who is doing the action and the outcome of the action.  Basic Elements of a Sentence Subject (S) Verb (V)  Object (0) Complement (C)  Adverbial (A) Subject The subject shows who or what is doing the action. It is always some form of noun or pronoun. Verb The verb shows the action or the state of being. Object An object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb in a sentence. Complement A complement is a word or word group that completes the predicate in a sentence. Adjunct An adjunct is a word, phrase or clause that can be removed from a sentence without making it grammatically incorrect. The Basic Elements of a Sentence A sentence has two basic elements: the subject and the predicate. Subject The subject is the performer of an action. It is usually at the beginning of a sentence. It may be a noun, a pronoun, a noun phrase, or a noun clause. Predicate Predicate can either describe an action that the subject is performing, or a state of being that the subject is experiencing. Subject-verb agreement Subject-verb agreement means using the right version of the verb to agree with the subject.  Phrase A phrase has at least two words and functions as one part of speech. Noun Phrase A noun phrase is a group of two or more words headed by a noun that includes modifiers. Role of the Noun Phrase A noun phrase plays the role of a noun. A noun phrase can function as a subject, an object, or a complement within a sentence. Noun phrases consist of a noun and all of its modifiers. Modifiers can include adjectives, articles, participles, or possessive nouns and pronouns. Subject of a sentence A sentence has one main subject, which is the subject of the main verb. However, a sentence can include other subjects that are the subjects of other verbs. The subject of a sentence is a noun or a pronoun and all the modifiers that go with it. Verb The verb shows the action or the state of being. A transitive verb is one that takes an object. The normal order of words in an English sentence is subject + verb + object. Some verbs are not normally followed by objects. These are called intransitive verbs. Some verbs are followed by adverb participles. Object In the traditional sentence pattern, an object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb in a sentence. Types of objects There are two types of objects: direct objects and indirect objects. Direct object A direct object receives the action of the verb directly. Indirect object An indirect object receives the action indirectly, usually through a preposition or a verb phrase. Complement A complement is a word or word group that completes the predicate in a sentence. Adjunct An adjunct is a word, phrase or clause that can be removed from a sentence without making it grammatically incorrect.  Thanks for listening.
