  • Graduation!!! (Finally)
    May 22 2024

There is something magical about graduating seniors from high school. In some cases, it makes them somebody else's problem, but in most cases we have watched self-conscious, immature little 9th graders mature into functioning humans.

I (Amy) am always so excited to guide the graduates through the line, and speak with them individually, hug some, fist bump others, and celebrate with all of them.

The kids who struggled through school the most, generally bring me the greatest joy.

As it is the last week of the year this week and I picked up a really awesome cold, we are again late to the episode posting party.

  • Testing... Testing... Testing
    May 13 2024

Heather and Amy share their stories from years of over testing students to the point that the students were unaware of an electrical fire during the state math test one year.

It has gotten to the point that maybe the country will realize that high stakes testing is part of why the education of our students is not producing the caliber of students that were once turned out of the high schools of America. Or, not.

  • Spring Fever
    May 7 2024

Sorry y'all. We are a day late. It is Amy's fault. My get up and go is dragging as it does during this time of year. Like most teachers, May is all about survival.

Spring in the high school is an adventure for all. By adventure, I mean a high stress, exhausting, sprint to the end of the year.

Kids are testing and facing new realities.

Teachers are hanging on by their fingernails and taking deep breaths.

Guidance is losing their minds trying to juggle the chaos of this year's kids and next year's enrollment.

    Fun stuff!!

  • Teacher Faves
    Apr 29 2024

Yes, teachers have favorites. It's true. Sometimes we don't enjoy teaching everything in our disciplines. I for one, despise teaching poetry. I do it, but I don't like it.

What makes some things fun to teach and others, not so fun? It comes down to student engagement. The more students engage and relate, the more fun the topic at hand is. Of course, if a teacher hates it, it will come across to the kids as well. How does someone go about teaching the career unit to seniors, when they woud rather be reading anything else? Deep breathing and talking yourself into being interested in something that is boring, so the kids might find something interesting in the mass of boring.

  • Not Another Meeting
    Mar 25 2024

Amy and Heather dive into faculty meetings and why they should probably be illegal. (Ok, that is Amy's view alone.)

Scheduling an hour long meeting at the end of a day where people are exhausted from staying a step ahead of issues that arise in a building full of teenagers and subbing for other teachers becuase subs are in short supply and then telling these same people nothing valuable is cruel and unusual punishment.

Join Heather and Amy in some of our more memorable meetings that didn't even need to be an e-mail.

    Side note:

Somehow in the computer debacle of two weeks ago, Amy is struggling to bring up the other half of episode 9. She is working on it, but she is my no means a tech genius as you are all painfully aware. So there is a bit of a flip flop on our episodes this week.

One day, Amy will have her life together. (Probably 3 years into retirement.)

  • Teachers are Weird
    Mar 18 2024

Phew... We are a little late today. Amy is a dummy and didn't back up the recordings in time, so when her computer gave the blue screen of death and IT came and collected it, she was sure everything was gone for good.

Thank goodness, Lateisha the IT Goddess managed to save it and everything on it. Unfortunately, there are some strange sound issues in this episode which are totally unrelated and have more to do with something Amy probably did, rather than the commputer of doom scenario previously described.

Today Heather and I discuss some of our strangest and fascinating co-workers of the past. Sometimes, overconfidence does not pay off. Esapecially when working with teenagers.

I hope you enjoy and I truly apologize for the sound issues and tardy release of today's episode. Luckily, I forgot my lunch, so I had a little time today.

  • What are you wearing?
    Mar 11 2024

Join Heather and Amy as the share some of their favorite memories of school dress up days and the unexpected consequences that may be involved.

Teachers have worn some crazy outfits to work and in the school building it may seem normal, to the outside eye... not so much.
