In part 2 we look at Kathryn Bright and Shirley Vian, who were both victims of Dennis Rader, known as the BTK Killer.

• Kathryn Bright: In April 1974, 21-year-old Kathryn Bright was attacked in her Wichita home. Rader attempted to strangle her, but she fought back. He then stabbed her and fled the scene. Kathryn's brother, Kevin, was also present and was shot but survived. This was the second BTK murder, following the Otero family killings in January 1974.
• Shirley Vian: Three years later, in March 1977, Rader attacked 25-year-old Shirley Vian in her Wichita home. He forced his way in, possibly following her young son. Shirley's children were home at the time but were locked in a bathroom by Rader. He then tied Shirley up and strangled her.

These two murders, along with the Oteros, established a pattern for Rader's crimes, which continued for decades.

Dennis Rader grew up in Wichita, Kansas. Details about his early life are limited, but there are reports of him exhibiting disturbing behavior like harming animals. After high school, he had a short stint in college but dropped out and joined the Air Force in the mid-60s. Upon discharge in 1970, he returned to Wichita, married, and took various jobs, including one at a security company. By 1974, he seemed to be living a normal life, but beneath the surface, his dark urges were brewing. On January 14, 1974, Dennis entered the home of the Otero Family, making this his first set of murders.

Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl, was tragically murdered in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada in November 1997. The case became a national tragedy due to the brutality of the crime and the fact that Reena was bullied by the group involved before her death.

Six teenagers were ultimately convicted for their participation in the assault and murder. The case sparked a national conversation about bullying and violence among youth.
