Paul Murdaugh was the carefree, party-loving youngest son of Alex and Maggie Murdaugh and the great-grandson of Randolph Murdaugh, a prominent South Carolina solicitor who started the Murdaugh dynasty that has dominated Hampton County for decades. • 12. Knoxville, TN: Christa Pike
    Mar 19 2024

In the United States, there are only 27 states where the death penalty is an allowable conviction for especially heinous crimes of murder or terrorism. Tennessee, being one of those states, currently holds the youngest woman of her time who was convicted of the death penalty: Christa Pike. The crime she committed was so brutal that an investigator quoted her as being "the most evil person" he'd ever met... at just 18 years old! Just like Christa, Colleen Slemmer was hoping for a better future when she left home to travel to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for the Job Corps. Unfortunately, she crossed paths with Christa, who wanted her gone.

What led Christa to take the life of Colleen Slemmer in 1995? Was it for a satanic sacrifice or just plain jealousy?

  • 10. Jackson, MS: Phillip Gibbs and James Earl Green
    Mar 5 2024

The 1970s were marked by significant strides in civil rights for African Americans and deep-seated societal unrest. On college campuses across the nation, you would often find students staging protests against the Vietnam War and the draft, but that wasn't the reason why students at Jackson State University, then Jackson State College, were upset. Students and administration were involved in a conflict that started on John R. Lynch Street, a busy commuter route that divided the college in half. Because they were worried about the safety of the students, they called for the city to step in immediately to fix the dangerous situation. But the answer they got was the exact opposite of what they asked for, culminating in the death of two students, Phillip Gibbs and James Earl Green.

Listen as Mrs. Gailya Porter, a survivor, recounts the events that transpired before that evening and the profound impact it continues to have on the university.

Riley Crossman was kind, gentle, and as dramatic as teenagers come. She was a gifted singer and dancer and loved spending her free time with her best friend, Jasmine.

On May 8, 2019, when her high school called to inform her mom that she hadn't been present that day, the search would lead to a monster in her home.

  • 8. Valdosta, GA: Kendrick "KJ" Johnson
    Feb 21 2024

When the story of Lowndes High School sophomore Kendrick "KJ" Johnson started to make national news, many of us asked ourselves the same question... "HOW!?"

How does a student, let alone a three-sport athlete, get stuck upside down into a rolled-up gym mat? How did no one hear him scream or see him dive in, even though surveillance showed other students enter the gym with him? How, even with all of the evidence, do authorities still believe this was just a freak accident?
