  • Moses Lake School District, graduations and state championships
    May 31 2024

Some tough decisions for the Moses Lake School District, a timeline for a new Grant County morgue and seniors saying goodbye to high school are among the topics for the Studio Basin podcast this week.

Moses Lake School Board members voted last week to borrow money from its capital projects fund to ensure the district could pay its payroll and bills in June. School board members and MLSD officials have been working to address the district’s financial situation in the wake of a rejection of an educational programs and operations levy in April, and the subsequent discovery of some accounting errors that led district officials to believe they had more money than they actually did. It’s an ongoing story, and there will be more to come.

Grant County officials are looking for property to build a new county morgue after determining that the first option, building a facility as part of Samaritan Hospital, wouldn’t work

Grant County Central Services Director Tom Gaines said the space the hospital could provide was too small, given the county’s caseload. County officials have identified a piece of property and are talking with MLSD officials about a purchase.

And it’s the end of the school year, and graduations are dead ahead. June 7 and 8 will be chock full of graduations, from Almira/Coulee-Hartline to Wahluke. A full list of graduations is available on the Columbia Basin Herald website, www.columbiabasinherald.com.

In sports, four local teams qualified for their respective state championship games; the Royal boys soccer team, the Warden softball team, the Almira/Coulee-Hartline baseball team and the Royal softball team.

Royal soccer, Warden softball and ACH baseball all placed second in their title games, while the Royal softball team captured its first fastpitch softball state championship by defeating Seton Catholic 16-4 in the 1A state championship game on May 25.
