Teens and Drinking: What you Need to Know and How Parents can Influence Behavior

  • Resumen

  • In today’s episode, we sit down with Professor Rob Turrisi, a leading expert in behavioral decision-making and substance misuse prevention, to discuss teen drinking. With decades of research, Turrisi shares insights on the developmental factors influencing alcohol use among adolescents and emerging adults, exploring the transition from high school to college, peer environments, and alarming data on blackout drinking and alcohol use disorder. We discuss the impact of positive communication, effective monitoring, and setting clear household rules. We also dive into common misconceptions, such as the belief that allowing teens to drink at home prevents binge drinking in college.

Wanted more of the risks/data details

For a show that was longer than 1hr, I expected to have much more detail on the inherent risks to underage drinking (other than “reduction of inhibitions”). Why do kids not need their inhibitions to be reduced? What does drinking do to the developing brain? How does drinking physically impact the growth and development of the body? This was a great podcast to motivate parents to develop relationships early with their kids to help curb drinking, but if you were already on board with not starting to drink early, it doesn’t give much detail that you can share with your growing kids as to “why” that decision is the best decision for them.
