4 / The Anthony Sanchez Story: "Death Sentence" : As the trial wraps up and the verdict comes down, Anthony Sanchez refuses to be deterred in declaring his innocence.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Close to eight years after Juli Busken was abducted, raped and murdered, Anthony Sanchez was charged with the crime. Investigators claimed that Sanchez’s DNA was a perfect match to the DNA found on Busken’s person. Sanchez was arrested, charged, convicted and sentenced to death based primarily on the DNA evidence.

Following his conviction and sentencing, Sanchez turned to Juli Busken’s parents and said, "Mr. and Mrs. Busken, I didn't kill your daughter…I swear to God, I didn't kill your daughter."

Along with steadfastly maintaining his innocence, Sanchez has raised numerous issues since his conviction, including the fact that DNA evidence in the case was handled by an employee overseen by disgraced Oklahoma City Police Department chemist Joyce Gilchrist. Gilchrist was fired from her job based on having helped prosecutors secure numerous false convictions by manipulating DNA evidence.

In a bombshell Oklahoma City Police Department memorandum, investigators cited the following issues in the DNA lab, “(1) missing evidence in numerous cases; (2) contamination issues due to evidence being ‘stacked all over the chemist’s area’; (3) systematic destruction of rape evidence after two years, well before the statute of limitations expired; (4) lack of peer review in many cases; and (5) the absence of proficiency testing, although such testing had been paid for.”

To a society that seems desperate to execute Anthony Sanchez, I can’t help but ask:  “What if we’re wrong?”

Surely, the words execution and doubt should never go together.
