Many thanks to David Hirsch, author of "21st Century Dads: A Father's Journey to Break the Cycle of Father Absence" and several other books. In 1997, David conceived the Illinois Fatherhood Initiative, the country's first state-wide nonprofit fatherhood organization. He also started the Dads Honor Ride, a charity to raise awareness and resources for fatherhood.

David hosts the Special Father's Network podcast, "Dad to Dad," devoted to fathers, kids, and family, which recently aired its 300th episode. David's heartfelt mission is to help fathers be more present for their kids.

David also introduced me to Jim Elliott, who founded Diveheart.org, a nonprofit organization that teaches disabled people to scuba dive. I enjoyed interviewing Jim about Diveheart's amazing work in Episode #113 of "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner."

  • "Activism is Medicine:" an interview with author Frank Forencich
    Jul 7 2024

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Frank Forencich, author of "Activism is Medicine," for appearing on this episode of "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner."

Frank suffered a multitude of childhood illnesses and immune disorders, which subsided after he discovered sports in high school. Witnessing the positive changes to his health, he became passionate about fitness, "the body, movement, and exercise." He devoted significant energy to martial arts, obtaining Black Belts in Aikido and Karate. Frank espouses the importance of "spirit" and "journey" as well as "destination" when tackling large-scale problems like climate change and threats to biodiversity.

Frank studied human biology at Stanford University. His interest in human evolution led to a trip to Africa to visit the "ancestral environment" of human beings. These experiences formed the backdrop for his book, "Activism in Medicine."

  • "End the Legacy:" Fighting Familial ALS, an interview with Daniel Barvin, MBA
    Jun 23 2024

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Daniel Barvin, MBA, for joining me on the "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner."

My good friend Michael Weisberg, MD, introduced us. I interviewed Mike on Episode #14 about his second novel, "In the End."

Daniel has an important story to tell. His family has been affected multiple times by genes that cause ALS and dementia. This first-hand experience prompted Daniel to focus his work on ALS education and advocacy. Daniel is the Co-Founder of Endthelegacy.org, a nonprofit organization that supports individuals at risk for familial ALS.

Daniel is also the Vice President of Operations and Patient Advocacy at Coya Therapeutics, a new company that hopes to find treatments for neurodegenerative diseases like ALS and dementia. Dr. Stanley Appel's research on neuroinflammation inspired the therapeutic direction of Coya Therapeutics. Dr. Appel has been actively caring for ALS patients for decades.
