  • 20: HR, EDI Strategy and Employee Activism
    Jul 14 2021
It’s my absolute pleasure to bring you a beautiful soul that I’ve been fortunate to get to know over this past year. She’s originally a fellow northern lass, as you’ll detect from her warm and friendly accent. But she’s so much more than that. She’s insightful, a true people person through and through, and frankly age defying because she certainly looks younger than me. I’m talking about the wonderful Janet Houlis from VALO Consultancy.
Now Janet has over 33 years of experience in HR, People and Change Management Consultancy. She partners with clients to develop change management, EDI strategies, and business transformation initiatives. Through her consultancy work, Janet helps businesses take meaningful steps towards being equitable, inclusive and diverse organisations, whilst keeping their employees at the heart of everything they do.
In this episode we discuss the two types of HR professional, HR’s role in the anti-racism movement, which groups are being left off the EDI agenda, and the rise of employee activism.
Those working in HR will not want to miss this valuable and thought provoking interview.
So, grab yourself a drink, get comfortable, hit play and let's get into this week's courageous conversation.

  • 17: NVD Stories - Life with Lupus
    Jun 3 2021
This week I had the pleasure if interviewing Regine Demuynck.
Having moved to England in 1978, Régine has had a number of careers throughout her professional life. Alongside her regular employment, she has been a self-employed alternative therapist since 2004.
In the last 12 years, she was both a teacher and a tutor of French and Spanish, and her love of words has led her to a new path: writer of fiction.  She writes under the name of Andrée Roby and has published 3 books since 2019.
Now just like me, Regine is someone who lives with a non-visible disability. In 2013 she was diagnosed with various auto-immune diseases which have since impacted her life in many ways. In this interview, Regine discusses some of her experiences of living and working with a non-visible disability.
Those of you who know my backstory know that this topic is incredibly close to my heart because of my own experience, some of which I also share in this episode.
Hopefully this episode will help you become more informed around some of the ways people can be affected by this issue, and why it’s matters that you’re providing the right support as an employer, colleague, friend, or family member.
A true must listen episode for HR Directors, and anyone in a people management position.
So, grab yourself a drink, get comfortable, hit play and let's get into this week's courageous conversation.

  • 15: Finding Freedom by Creating Headspace
    May 19 2021
This week I’m talking to Sue Tappenden, from Headspace for Change.
Sue is a transformational whole-life coach, and a natural-born trouble-shooter with a practical approach to problem solving.  She helps stressed, working women take back control of their lives in a deeper, permanent, and life-changing way through coaching, counselling, and mentoring.
She works with smart, capable women who are working hard to juggle it all. They want their life to feel different but nothing they’ve tried in an effort to feel better makes any sustainable difference.
Whether it’s working with Sue 1:1 or as part of her Group Programme, she helps women make fundamental changes to how they are running the show, so they can take back control in a way that fits who they are.
Sue’s style is relaxed, engaging, and with some humour thrown in. Unlike many other coaches who focus on changing what their clients are doing, she helps women make changes to the person they are being. This makes the results effective and long-lasting.
Sue specialises in individual, organisational and system change. It all happens through human beings and their relationships - and that’s her thing!  She’s been a senior leader in the public sector and led large-scale change projects, is a qualified HR professional and continues to work with organisations across a range of sectors through her successful consultancy practice.  Sue’s work with all clients is informed by her MSc in Change Agent Skills and Strategies, HR/OD background, consulting experience and plenty of ongoing personal and professional development.
Sue appears regularly as an Agony Aunt for Pick Me Up magazine, helping readers to deal with cheating husbands, body image issues, concerns about their children, and all the other everyday things we worry about!  She loves this work because it enables her to help others through a different and far-reaching media, alongside the podcasts and other speaking opportunities that she loves to do.
Our conversation points included advice for leaders and HR professionals on prioritising their own wellbeing, healing fractured relationships, and the importance of creating psychological safety in the workplace.

  • 14: Breathing New Life into Well-being
    May 13 2021
To mark Mental Health Awareness Week here in the UK, I had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Crinnion. Michael is the brains behind an innovative well-being companion called Luma³.
Luma³ has been designed to boost your well-being with simple, easy guided breathing techniques.
Best of all, Luma³ allows you to practice conscious breathing and establish a healthy habit, without having to use a mobile phone, which can often be a cause of stress and tension in itself. Think of it as a tool to give your brain a 5 minute reboot, in between 55 minute focussed work sessions.
Michael, a former Teacher, is deeply passionate about mental health, well-being, and supporting young people in becoming their best self. In fact, he’s so committed that for every 10 Luma³ he sells, he donates one to a school.
To hear us discussing all this and so much more, hit the play button now.
Whether you’re someone who cares about your own well-being, or your profession involves taking responsibility for the well-being of others, I promise you’ll enjoy listening in to our chat.
