Lisa Zarcone is a Child Abuse Survivor. She is the Author of “The Unspoken Truth A Memoir”. Lisa is a Child and mental health advocate, public speaker, Social Media Influencer and Radio Personality and the MA National Ambassador for Naasca (National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse) She received the 2023 Women of Impact Award from the Business West Magazine. Lisa is the 2021 Massachusetts Heroine Award Recipient and she also has her own Blog on her website www.lisazarcone.net As the Massachusetts National Ambassador & Regional Director for NAASCA (National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse), she uses her title and personal story as a platform to speak publicly about child abuse and mental health. Her vigorous career includes, conference presentations, workshops, author talks, podcast interviews, TV, Newspaper, Radio & DJ Spotlights and so much more. She is also a Wife, mother of three and grandmother of four. Lisa took all her past experiences of trauma and abuse writing a powerful, raw and detailed memoir of her life. She shares her story through the eyes of a child, giving the reader a first-hand view of abuse through the child’s perspective. This is a profound look at her life as it unfolds. Lisa gained her voice by validating her story, healing through the process. By looking at the views and prospective of the people in her life that hurt and abused her, she found understanding and forgiveness. It was a difficult journey, but she dug deep into her past, sifting through the rubble piece by piece. Lisa is a fierce advocate for child safety and mental health. At this time, she is advocating for mental health programing in our schools. She has released her second book, “The Book of Joann”. This is her mother’s story and their journey together. A look into Joann’s world will show people how mental illness and abuse is generational, and without understanding and awareness we cannot break the cycle.     This episode is full of surprises. We love it! “The Duke Lott Show” welcomes Author J.A. Smith to the show. We learn so much more about the life of a talented author, writer and magazine publisher and Mom of, get this Six(6) boys living in the great state of Hawaii. Her life has felt like many different stories throughout her time. Having moved many times throughout her life, each time it felt like she began a new story. It was like each time she would become a different person with new challenges to take on. Meeting new people with new diversions to accomplish. Learning and finding new meanings in life. J. A. Smith believes the saying that people come into your life for a reason. They walk in when they are needed and then walk out when they have accomplished their quest, and that is how a good book is written. But with great imagination to go along with it. Not that all stories are good or bad, just unique in the way one who tells it. She believes, writing fantasy lets you see that anything is possible, it only allows the mind its freedom to see what can happen! She is thankful for the world of imagination! Well, she considers herself to be a Gypsy/ Her husband got his old job back in Honolulu, Hawaii and they moved back in March 2024 for the second time. Somehow she got this crazy idea to start a Magazine. It’s called “Oahu To You”, under the name of Ms. Julie. Having released 3 Editions now. Nandi even reads a poem for us at the end.🙏🏿Raised in Detroit and a graduate of Communications and Media Arts High School in Detroit, Nandi Comer has received bachelor’s degrees in English and in Spanish with an emphasis on Latin American Culture from the University of Michigan. She has received fellowships from Cave Canem, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Callaloo, and a translation fellowship by U.S. Poets in Mexico. Nandi Comer’s writing received the Vera Myer Strube Award in poetry. Comer is the winner of Crab Orchard Review’s 2014 Richard Peterson Poetry Prize. In 2016, she completed a master’s degree in African American Literature from the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies and a Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Poetry from the English Department at Indiana University. She is a 2019 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow. Over the years, Comer has been dedicated to youth development by serving as a writer-in-residence in Detroit Public Schools Community District and community centers. She has also worked in collaboration with organizations, including YArts and InsideOut Literary Arts Projects. Ms. Comer served as a curriculum developer and youth curriculum consultant for various arts organizations and in 2018 received the William Wiggins Award for Outstanding Teaching at Indiana University. Comer’s poems and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review, The Journal of Pan African Studies, Sycamore Review, and Third Coast. She is the author of American Family: Syndrome (Finishing Line Press) and Tapping Out (Northwestern University Press), which was awarded the 2020 Society of Midland Authors Award and the 2020 Julie Suk Award. Comer is currently the director of Allied Media Projects Seeds Program and the co-director of Detroit Lit, a program dedicated to providing reading and professional development opportunities to narrative makers of color in Detroit. The History of Michigan Poet Laureate position: 👇🏾👇 Prior to Comer’s selection, Michigan had only appointed one other state poet laureate. Edgar A. Guest (1881-1959) was named Poet Laureate through Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 38 (1952) of the Michigan Legislature. Guest held the title of Poet Laureate of the state of Michigan from 1952 until his death in 1959. Will Carleton (1847-1912) is sometimes referred to as the first Poet Laureate of Michigan. Public Act 51 of 1919 designated October 21 of each year as "Carleton Day" in memory of "Michigan's pioneer poet." However, "Carleton Day" was a commemorative school holiday in honor of Carleton as opposed to an appointed poet laureate title. "Carleton Day" was removed as a school holiday in 1995 as directed by Public Act 289 during a revision of the state of Michigan's school code.
