  • The Zone of Interest
    Jul 16 2024

We have something unique and somewhat special for you this week. Not a horror film in the traditional genre sense, last year's award-winning film from Jonathan Glazer THE ZONE OF INTEREST takes an unconventional approach to a story that's been told countless times. The Zone of Interest follows the family of Rudolf Hoss, a commandant stationed at the infamous Auschwitz death camp. The film never shows us what happens in the camp where Hoss works, but rather shows us the day-to-day, often casual existence of his family. Shots of his wife Hedwig tending to her garden are punctuated by gunshots and the occasional scream. This juxtaposition prompts a haunting reflection on our own life and culpability to the atrocities around us.

We are joined this week by friend of the FoG, Dr. David Gushee, who has appeared a few times before speaking to some of his recent books. He sits with us here to discuss his own historical research into the Holocaust and to unpack the potent approach this film takes to telling this story.

We hope you enjoy this week's discerned and thoughtful conversation.

  • A Quiet Place: Day One
    Jul 9 2024

Landing the third installment in the ever-growing Quiet Place universe, A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE gives us all new characters and a completely new location. Stylistically, it changes things up pretty dramatically and also takes the opportunity to dive into new territory thematically. On this episode, we talk from our hearts about how challenging -- but also how necessary -- it can be to hold onto hope in uncertain times. The threats change and the situations shift, but the choice seems to always remain the same.

This episode also features a Patron-only segment where Lackey the Listicle counts down some favorite "part 3" films in cinema history. We hope you enjoy it!

  • A Quiet Place Party
    Jul 2 2024

We have something a little different for you this week. In anticipation of the release of A Quiet Place Day One, we gathered some of our friends and FoGers together (including Vera Goudie, Andrew Nelson, Jocee Worley, and Steve Beckley) to have a pod party discussing the first two films in this franchise. We pour out lots of love on these films as well as identifying some quibbles, make some difficult choices, and selecting which songs we'd slow dance to when the apocalypse comes.

It's a fun, brisk, laugh-filled episode this week as we gear up for an episode NEXT week all about A Quiet Place Day One. We hope you enjoy!

  • Late Night with the Devil
    Jun 25 2024

One of the more unique and noteworthy horror films to release this year, following a successful festival run last year is the new film by the Cairnes brothers, LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL. The film almost entirely takes place on the set of a late 70s late night talk show where a Halloween special focusing on mediums and possession goes horribly awry. We gather a small group of FoGger favorites including Brandon Grafius and Jackson Harper to dive into this captivating and disarmingly fun film that also has a lot to say about the power of platform and the danger of attention.

This is a great film and we hope you enjoy our discussion about it as much as we did!

  • Godzilla Minus One
    Jun 18 2024

Go big or go home. Well this week, we're doing both as we bring the one and only GODZILLA MINUS ONE home to the Fear of God Podcast. This film absolutely swept the global imagination, becoming nearly unanimously praised for its thoughtful humanity, eye-popping (and Oscar winning) visual effects, and its rich, classical storytelling. We invited a bunch of guests, including returning friends Steven Beckley, Blake Collier, and Chris Clark along with first-time guest, author Kevin Cooney, to discuss the film's powerful, inspiring, terrifying, and deeply moving ideas.

We think you're gonna love this one. Check out this incredible film and we hope you enjoy our conversation!

  • New Life (2024)
    Jun 11 2024

In a somewhat rare opportunity for us, we are covering a film this week that was just released LAST week. NEW LIFE is an unexpectedly thoughtful and moving film about two women in a cat and mouse chase across the country. Jessica (Hayley Erin) is on the run while Elsa (Sonya Walger) is pursuing her. The stakes and details of the chase are revealed later in the film (to devastating effect) but along the way is a journey of discovery, loss, meaning, tragedy, and hope. The film is intimate and surprisingly profound. We're thrilled to be able to discuss it today and hope you all enjoy our conversation as much as we enjoyed having it!

Also featured in this episode is a new segment called FoG Your Consideration where we'll mention other films that should be on your radar. Hope you enjoy!

  • Shadow in the Cloud
    Jun 4 2024

Have we got a fun episode for you this week! SHADOW IN THE CLOUD from 2020 is part claustrophobic radio play, part creature-feature, part war movie, and part absolutely bananas-bonkers action fantasy. Chloe Grace-Moretz stars as a WWII gunner who boards a plane under top secret orders with some top secret cargo, only to discover mid-flight that the plane is under attack from a malevolent creature. We're joined this week by Vera Goudie, Jess Fischli, and Jocee Worley for a very lively debate about the film's merit, its message, and its manic, absurdist energy. Our individual opinions vary wildly on this film, but also guide us into a thoughtful reflection on the spectrum of perspectives in all walks of life, and provides a fascinating opportunity to make room for approaches and responses that differ greatly from our own.

Also featuring a Patron-Only Whatcha segment, we hope you enjoy hearing this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it.

Patron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?

4:42 - SHADOW IN THE CLOUD

Please note -- this conversation features a good bit of salty language. And also a fun little blooper after the credits.
