    Feb 20 2023

The first remake done for the show, this episode will be a deep dive into the creative differences between the original 1962 "Cape Fear" and its 1991 counterpart. • Episode 4: Shaft's Big Score
    Jan 17 2023
A desperate and greed-ridden attempt at keeping the music alive, "Shaft's Big Score" is a valiant effort in an attempt at fostering the early formation of a franchise, following the previous success of its predecessor "Shaft". Taking some big departures and tone shifts, the film ultimately is not as successful as the original (neither critically nor financially), but does still offer some of what made the first film great. Kel and Josh get into the details on this early entry into the Blaxploitation cannon.

  • Episode 3: The Color of Money
    Nov 17 2022
Not your standard sequel, "The Color of Money" took hold of a storyline that had begun some 25 years prior and brought it new life and new audiences in Martin Scorsese's follow-up to the Paul Newman classic, "The Hustler." A film that shares a lot of the rugged, dark, smoke-filled environments as the original, it takes several major departures from the structure, storytelling, and characters from the original as well as taking significant liberties with the source material, unlike the predecessor film. In this episode, Josh and Kel will talk about these similarities, differences, and more in what would be Paul Newman's only Oscar winning film.

  • Episode 2: Teen Wolf Too
    Nov 16 2022
Teen Wolf was an awkward and generally ill-received (albeit successful) film for what was a small, independent studio. Looking to capitalize on the original's success, the studio decided to make a sequel that was, unsurprisingly, even less well received and significantly less successful. The film has gained some notoriety in cult film circles, making it an interesting watch as Kel and Josh try to tackle the "why" and "how" of this strange sequel.

  • Episode 1: Aliens
    Nov 15 2022
Welcome to The Follow Up! In this show, the hosts Josh and Kel will talk about sequels and remakes of films and how they expand upon or alter the world of the film's predecessor. Should sequels be able to stand on their own? Should remakes follow the original's plot precisely or make alterations to form different narratives? Both of these questions, and more, will be discussed in this show. The first episode is about 1986's "Aliens" which is the follow up to the 1979 film "Alien." In this episode, Josh and Kel will talk about the genre shift that this film takes the franchise down as well as the changes in themes, combat, and progression in story line that this sequel begins. James Cameron's sci-fi dystopian action films are considered a hallmark of his early career. With this film being an addition to a pre-existing property, his direction and writing proved critical in the production getting made as well as creating a lasting impression that helped to spawn two additional sequels.
