Hi everyone, it’s Garrett. If you can’t already tell from looking at your screen, this is sort of a bad news announcement. I need to place the podcast on hiatus or potentially even shut it down at this point. The main gist is that I am learning things about my brain — call it mental health or whatever other term you wish — that require a re-ordering of priorities in how I organize my time and effort. And until I get a handle and a fuller understanding of what exactly this is and how to deal with it, I need to take things off my plate. This is indeed frustrating. I feel like I’m unable to sustain things that I ought to be able to do, but such is my lot, and God is good. Thank you for your support, and God bless.

  • The Marrow of Modern Divinity: Intros and Ch. 1, Sec. 1
    Dec 12 2022

In this episode, we continue reading The Marrow of Modern Divinity by Edward Fisher, beginning with the remaining introductory matter and finishing at the end of Chapter 1, section 1.

The Marrow of Modern Divinity was originally published in two parts in 1645 and 1649 respectively and attributed to the author who went by the pen name of just the initials E.F., later attributed to Edward Fisher. The core of the Marrow is a discourse among four characters, Evangelista the gospel minister, Nomist the legalist, Antinomista the antinomian, and Neophytus the young Christian. But before this, the introductory material does lay out the debate between Antonomianism and Legalism as he saw it in 1645.

Because this is audio, I’m not going to be able to record Thomas Boston's footnotes in a way that allows the discourse to flow on audio. These notes come with the recommendation of John Belfrage as we heard in the previous episode, so it may be worth your while to look them up as we go through the series.

  • The Marrow of Modern Divinity: Front Matter
    Dec 5 2022

In this episode, we begin reading The Marrow of Modern Divinity by Edward Fisher, beginning with just the majority of the front matter: the recommendations, preface, and dedication. These recommendations might name drop some names you've heard. We're definitely not in the weeds yet in this episode, but I do think the material to be historically valuable, and one of the purposes of this podcast is to increase the audio availability of such works. That means reading out the portions that might be less important in order to make sure these works are preserved in their completed form.

The Marrow of Modern Divinity was originally published in two parts in 1645 and 1649 respectively and attributed to the author who went by the pen name of just the initials E.F., later believed to be Edward Fisher, a barber. His work would later be republished in 1718, helping to stoke the flames of the Marrow Controversy in the Church of Scotland. This controversy concerned whether repentance is a necessary precondition for justification or a fruit that always flows receiving Christ. As it turns out, the controversy remain ever relevant in 2022.
