  • The Atwell's
    Oct 12 2020
This episode of The Invisible Vote features the Atwell's. Three generations of a politically engaged family that are all native New Yorkers. Edward Atwell, 79, Julie Atwell, 57, and Ondine Atwell, 21; a grandfather, mother and granddaughter. Edward and Julie have seen the country change from a period when certain modern day rights seemed like unachievable fantasies to gaining form and becoming realities that have empowered the masses ever since. Within the Gen Z cohort, Ondine observes an uptick in political engagement among her peers as they take to streets and use various political tools accessible to them to ensure their representatives know that people are paying attention and, as our leaders, they will be held accountable for their decisions.  In this episode, the Atwell's leave the listeners with much to reflect on: the weight of the 2020 elections and the life-altering issues that are hinged upon its outcome, the fragility of a Democratic Republic and the people who currently hold the tools of its maintenance, and the historical significance of our ability to vote and the importance to judge its impact from the lens of the collective and not the individual.  Resources mentioned: https://www.pewresearch.org/ Learn more about your ad choices. • The McPherson's
    Oct 14 2020
This episode of The Invisible Vote features the McPherson's. Crystal and Keith McPherson are a mother and son duo who are passionate about voting in America. While their passions are now aligned, this was not always the case. In the past, Keith routinely chose to forgo his right to vote due to feeling disenfranchised from politics and like his voice didn’t have much of an effect against “the powers that be”. This has changed since the 2016 elections; the outcome came as a surprise to Keith and galvanized him tremendously. He shares his journey from being apathetic to taking up space in the political sphere and empowering people in his community to do the same. Crystal, who has shown up at the ballot box consistently, explores the tension she feels in discussing politics with her white peers and how the recent BLM movement has finally empowered her to speak out against microaggressions against her community.  In this podcast you will learn about a mother and son who are coming together to share a mutual vision on heading to the ballot box and explore how class and race tie together in the US political system.  Resources mentioned: https://www.pewresearch.org/ https://blackdemographics.com/ Learn more about your ad choices.
