Mishlei 28:15 - Lions, Bears, and Despots like Achashveirosh (Part 2)

    Length: 30 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/26/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing what we covered yesterday. I then shared my own take on the pasuk, which dovetailed nicely with the interpretation of the pesichta by Rabbi Uzi Kalheim. I had wanted to go over a second explanation from the Maor Einayim (R. Yoshiyahu Pinto - the one who lived from 1565–1648, not the one born in 1973), but we didn't have time. Still, I'm really happy with our approaches to Mishlei AND the fact that we came up with a solid approach for the pesichta, which we can now use to frame our reading of Megilas Esther!

    Length: 42 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/25/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we took a break from our perek to learn a pasuk that we hope will shed light on Megilas Esther. On its surface, the pasuk addresses the effect of evil rulers on destitute people, but Reish Lakish uses it as an aggadic introduction to the Megilah. Today we developed our own approach and examined a few meforshim. Tomorrow, I’m hoping we’ll make headway on the midrash.

Mishlei 17:18 - Before You Agree to Back Up Your Friend ...

    Length: 1 hour 27 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (2/23/26), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we took up a pasuk that, on its surface, seemed overly specific and rather bland. We didn’t even come up with our usual number of questions or problems. Yet after a few false starts, we developed some genuinely strong ideas and learned a great deal from the meforshim, including a banger of a Rabbeinu Yonah. It was a good reminder that even a “boring”-looking pasuk can contain remarkable insights.

    Mishlei 25:18 - False Testimony as Weapon(s) (Part 2)

    Length: 29 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/19/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we continued our analysis of yesterday's pasuk. After reviewing our questions and approaches, then speculating about a derech nistar (esoteric approach), we read through several meforshim. While none of them offered anything radically new, we appreciated the nuanced directions they took, which led to a few new insights. We capped it off with the derecho nistar of the Meiri, which (in my opinion) was superior to our approach.

    Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/18/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we started learning either a pasuk which may be characterized as either a very blunt or a very precise mashal. We raised more questions than I expected and came up with some really nice possibilities! Disconcertingly, our go-to meforshim had VERY little to say (unless you count Ralbag on the Aseres ha'Dibros). Hopefully, the lengthier meforshim will provide us with insights tomorrow.

Mishlei 17:17 - Friends vs. Family

    Length: 1 hour 39 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (2/16/26), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned an interesting pasuk about the difference between the love of friends and the reliability of family. The style of this pasuk was unusual and ... unsettling? We came up with a nice set of our own ideas - so many, in fact, that we didn't have as much time to explore the meforshim before the end of shiur. Even though I liked what we said, I still would have preferred to find a solid chiddush in the meforshim, like we usually do. Oh well! We love our meforshim at all times; they aren't just born for times of adversity.

Mishlei 25:16-17 - Don't Make Your Friend Vomit (Part 2)

    Length: 36 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/12/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing the main approach from yesterday. We delved a bit deeper into the derech nigleh, trying to understand exactly what makes a person sick of his friend's presence. But our main goal was to focus on the derech nistar, which I WISH we had more time to explore! I'm especially happy with the idea we learned from Zerachiah Chein.

Someone recently asked me whether I find new chidushim in Mishlei. The question had the vibe of, "Don't you get bored?" I answered that we ALWAYS find new chidushim and we rarely get to more than a handful of meforshim before we have to move on. This week was yet another example.

    Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/11/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a pair of pesukim that might have been the inspiration for Ben Franklin's quip: "Guests, like fish, stink after three days." Shlomo ha'Melech's version, however, employs a gustatory mashal rather than an olfactory one. We developed one approach in-depth and a second approach after that. I'm most curious to see what the meforshim say tomorrow by way of the derech nistar.
