Mishlei 25:21-22 - Mishleic Revenge is a Dish Best Served (Part 2)

    Length: 31 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (3/26/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began with a quick review of the questions, then jumped right into the meforshim. We made it through a surprising number of interpretations in our 31 minutes, both nigleh and nistar. I was initially worried that we wouldn't have enough material for two days of shiur, but it turned out to be quite the opposite! Even well-trodden pesukim are a font of insight.

    Length: 43 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (3/25/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning a pasuk I’ve learned and taught DOZENS of times, one of my favorite “introductory pesukim.” It may not follow the structure of a typical Mishlei pasuk, but it exemplifies Mishlei’s approach to decision-making and character development. Today we came up with two approaches of our own and learned two meforshim who share the approach I usually teach. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we’ll be on the hunt for chidushim, especially in the derech nistar.

Mishlei 17:21 - Two Failed Fathers of Two Mishleic Fools

    Length: 1 hour 42 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (3/23/26), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk which fit squarely into two Mishleic genres: (1) Mishleic parenting, and (2) seemingly obvious pesukim. Once again, I was a bit nervous because of how little the meforshim had to offer, and once again, I was pleased with what we and they came up with! This was also my first time delving into what appears to be a niche Mishleic archetype: the naval. Another nice haul!

    Length: 43 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (3/19/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing what we covered yesterday, filling in a few more translation nuances. We spent the bulk of our time learning through the three explanations given by Saadia Gaon which, according to him, are all related in their practical application. At the end, we read through part of the Meiri and ventured a guess as to what he might have meant, but didn't have time to give him the attention he deserves. I'm pleased with what we came up with and glad that we only scratched the surface!

    Length: 44 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (3/18/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we started learning another "triple comparison pasuk." This one was made difficult by our lack of knowledge about the second metaphor. Still, we managed to come up with two nice (and somewhat opposite) approaches. I'm very curious to see what the meforshim say about that mysterious mashal tomorrow.

Mishlei 17:20 - Crooked Hearts and Reversed Speech

    Length: 1 hour 23 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (3/16/26), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we took up a pasuk that felt simultaneously generic and specific. We came up with good approaches, some complete and some on their way there, but then I hit a wall of exhaustion (due to a short, interrupted sleep the night before). We quickly had to deploy my own approach that I developed with my high school students earlier that day. Because my mind was zonked, I don't know if I got it out clearly. We did one more interpretation from the meforshim, then called it a night even without review. Still good Mishlei, even if it wasn't up to par.

    Length: 29 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (3/12/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we did a brief recap of yesterday's approaches, then started learning through the meforshim. First, Immanuel ha'Romi supported our take and provided two additional explanations. We speculated about our own derech nistar, but weren't entirely successful. I'm not sure whether we fully grasped Saadia Gaon, but we definitely learned a foundational idea from him. We concluded with the Meiri's derech nistar, which ended with a tzarich iyun. Still, a great haul!
