Fascinating to hear the start of Brandon Mull's writing career!

As far as I know I've read just about everything that Brandon Mull has written. As an adult in my 50s, I'm sure I'm not his typical audience, lol! However I do gravitate towards books and stories that are fantastical and imaginative, while not being overly offensive to biblically Christian morality. For that, I don't know that I have ever seen his equal in YA literature.

I've read the Fablehaven series, of course, and the Dragon Watch sequel. Beyonders is fantastic, Five Kingdoms rivitting, and among the Candy Shop Wars the most recent addition was really the best of all three. At any rate, when I'm looking for a new author to read I'm really looking for a lot of the things that I find in Brandon's writing. Those things include an exquisite imagination... An aquarium that exists simultaneously in two dimensions? Floating sky castles that get raided by bands of floating pirates? A spy who can remove his own head and juggle it? A law keeper who takes it easy on the bad guys because he's under a curse that causes him to feel all the pain he inflicts? Seriously, the most gifted imagination! So today, with a band new shiny credit in my Audible bank I set out to see what he might have that's new and I stumbled onto this podcast. It was fascinating and I've subscribed!

Now I have to share one other thing because Brandon mentions in the show that he prayed and felt like he received and answer to his prayer. Brandon is a Mormon, not part of the historical Christian faith. His beliefs come out in his writing and they do differ quite a bit from historical Christianity... You will often see his characters choose to disobey and because of that choice good things happen. This is a foundational belief of Mormons is due to their founder's re-writing of the Genesis account which portrays the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden as being sort of naughty, but resulting in great good. That is nothing like the event described in the Bible which plunged the world into death, and indeed is where Mormonism begins to diverge from historic Biblical Christianity. Additionally you will be see his characters set their jaws and muster up the internal willpower to "be good!" This idea that we have some good internal center is a pagan one that Christianity rejects. As far as mentioning the Mormons by name, there is only one mention in passing in one of the later Dragon Watch books.

I feel it's important, especially for parents to know and understand. Brandon Mull is a fantastic writer, and like all good writers, his deeply held personal beliefs come out in his stories. However, many genuine Christians may not catch their undertone, and/or newer believers may be completely unaware that there is even any difference between the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" and historical Christianity.

For most kids, the undercurrent of Mormon thought will be mostly harmless, and can be brought out by thoughtful parents to be discussed with their kids contrasted with the Bible's actual teaching. Having said all that, he is quite sincerely, my favorite author, and one whom I pray for frequently. As I said, I've subscribed to the podcast and I look forward to hearing the next episode, along with... Hopefully, some ideas about any new upcoming projects he may be working on!
