  • Hunter Pence and the Trade Deadline
    Jul 30 2024

The Philadelphia Phillies needed a right-handed bat before the July 2011 trade deadline, so Ruben Amaro Jr. picked up Hunter Pence from the Houston Astros. Pence became an immediate fan favorite. While Phillies fans wait to see if Dave Dombrowski, Sam Fuld and Co. will make another move before Tuesday’s 6 p.m. ET trade deadline, take a stroll down memory lane with Pence, who put up huge numbers for the Phillies on their way to a franchise-record 102 games in 2011. Pence remembers the good times, the agony of losing to the Cardinals in the NLDS and being traded to the Giants in July 2012. In between, though, there are plenty of laughs, and a nice little surprise that illustrates just how popular Pence became in such a short period of time in Philadelphia.

  • Carlos Estévez and the Superstars
    Jul 29 2024

The Phillies made another trade over the weekend, acquiring Angels closer Carlos Estévez for a couple pitching prospects. It seems to be a perfect fit for the Phillies, who have been looking for more stability in the late innings. But is this it? Are the Phillies really finished making moves before Tuesday’s 6 p.m. ET trade deadline?

Ruben and Jim aren’t convinced, with Jim hearing that the Phillies continue to monitor the starting pitching market. Bryce Harper was asked Sunday how he feels about the Phillies as they are constructed heading into the final two months of the season, if Estévez and Austin Hays are the only two acquisitions president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski makes before the trade deadline. The Phillies have lost 8 of 12 and have played .500 for the past several weeks.
“Yeah, the superstars got to show up,” Harper said.

  • The Austin Hays trade
    Jul 27 2024

The Phillies have been looking for a right-handed-hitting outfielder for months. They got their man on Friday, when they acquired Austin Hays from the Orioles for Seranthony Domínguez and Cristian Pache.

    First reactions following the deal?

Well, the Phillies didn’t give up a single prospect, meaning they still have plenty of quality players to deal to get a big bullpen arm.

By trading Domínguez, the Phillies opened the door to acquiring more than one bullpen arm for the stretch drive.

By acquiring Hays, Brandon Marsh could see more time in center field with Johan Rojas.

Ruben, Jim and Todd break down the Hays deal, and what might be coming next for Dave Dombrowski and the rest of the Phillies’ front office before Tuesday’s 6 p.m. ET trade deadline.

  • Tyler Phillips is living his dream
    Jul 26 2024

Every baseball fan growing up in the Delaware Valley dreams of playing for the Philadelphia Phillies one day. Tyler Phillips’ dreams came true. The South Jersey native and Bishop Eustace graduate grew up a diehard Phillies fan. He joined the organization in July 2021 and worked his way into a big league promotion earlier this month. How has Phillips done? Well, he struck out seven batters in relief in his debut against the Braves on July 7. He is 2-0 as a starter. He has struck out 15 and walked one in 16 innings overall. It’s been a wildly fun absolutely surreal experience. Phillips spoke about his long journey to the big leagues, what it means to him and his family to be pitching for his hometown team and much more, including signing autographs for kids and maybe one day asking Bryce Harper for an autograph for his own collection. A fun, thoughtful conversation with the Phillies’ rookie right-hander.

  • Phillies looking for bullpen help
    Jul 25 2024

The Phillies opened the second half of their season with a 2-4 road trip through Pittsburgh and Minnesota. It should have been 4-2, but the bullpen blew a couple late-inning leads. The Phillies already had been looking for a late-inning reliever before the July 30 trade deadline, but the pen’s recent struggles only reinforced the idea that they must find somebody, not only to help them in the regular season, but in the postseason, too.

How far do the Phillies go? A half-season rental, which will be more affordable? Or a big fish who will carry a steep price?

Ruben shares his experiences acquiring Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence in consecutive trade deadlines from 2009-11.

There are eight days remaining before the July 30 trade deadline, and the Phillies have needs

One of them popped up on Friday, when José Alvarado blew a save in Pittsburgh. Alvarado hasn’t been as sharp as seasons past, perhaps reinforcing the front office’s belief that it needs to fortify the bullpen with another late-inning veteran reliever. The Phillies need a right-handed-hitting outfielder, too. Weston Wilson has played well since he replaced Whit Merrifield. Could he actually step up and fill that role, or must the Phillies find somebody else?

Fortunately for the Phillies, Tyler Phillips has stepped up as the team’s No. 5 starter. The local kid shut down Pittsburgh in Sunday’s series finale, snapping the Phillies’ three-game losing streak to avoid a sweep. There are a few things that have impressed Ruben, Jim and Todd’s about the rookie’s early performances. They discussed.

The Phillies open a three-game series on Monday night in Minnesota. Ranger Suárez and Zack Wheeler are back. What do we hope to see from both of them?

Plus, some late-inning food talk including walleye-on-a-stick and Juicy Lucys.

  • What to Watch in the Second Half
    Jul 19 2024

The Phillies won a franchise-record 62 games before the All-Star break.

They sent a franchise-record eight players to the All-Star Game.

There’s 11 days until the July 30 trade deadline.

There’s less than 11 weeks before the postseason.

Ruben, Jim and Todd discuss a few storylines to follow for the Phillies in the second half:

    1. Zack Wheeler and Ranger Suárez returning to dominance following recent back issues.
    2. Just keeping everything healthy and effective entering the postseason.
    3. Who do the Phillies get before the July 30 trade deadline?
    4. It would be great to see Bryson Stott, Seranthony Domínguez and others pick it up in the second half.
    5. Can Bryce Harper win a third NL MVP? Can Zack Wheeler win his first NL Cy Young? Can Trea Turner win the Phillies’ first NL batting title since 1958?

  • We've Only Just Begun
    Jul 15 2024

The Phillies finished the first half with a stinker on Sunday against the A’s, but with a franchise-record 62 wins at the All-Star break.

It couldn’t have gone much better.

Ruben, Jim and Todd spend the first day of the All-Star break looking back at the Phillies’ historic first half. They dig into the special performance from the rotation, but they can’t help but express concerns about its health.

They name the Phillies’ first half MVP and Cy Young. No surprises there. They discuss first-half disappointments, too.

But no matter how hard they tried to focus on the first half, they couldn’t help but think about the future, especially after watching A’s slugger Brent Rooker and A’s closer Mason Miller impress this weekend at Citizens Bank Park.

What would it take to get one of them?

What would it take to get both?

More Phillies trade talk to come before the July 30 trade deadline.
