  • ENCORE RUN: Why Des Linden Is Still Proving Everyone Wrong in Her 40s
    Jul 4 2024
Des Linden is not your typical marathon champion. Instead of emulating others, Des blazes her own path. Some might say that she even prides herself on not doing things like everyone else. And when someone tells her she can’t, she figures out a way to prove she can. Des is a two time Olympian and became the first American woman in 33 years to win the Boston Marathon on a brutally cold and rainy Patriot’s Day in 2018. At age 39, she is still competing professionally and will be toeing the line at Boston again this year. Welcome to the Planted Runner. I’m Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition. Today I’m sharing my conversation with Olympian Des Linden. You’ll learn: Some of the stories behind her historic win in Boston How her training has changed as she has gotten older, and Why she keeps showing up in the sport when some would say her best years are behind her. Des has written a memoir of her life and incredible career called “Choosing to Run.” In it she shares the behind-the-scenes of her amazing accomplishments, some of which she’s never told before. We also talk about why she’s always felt like a little bit of an outsider in the professional running scene and why she wouldn’t have it any other way. Don’t forget to stay tuned all the way to the end of the episode for another Mental Strength Minute. Fortify your mind in 60 seconds or less. LINKS: This episode is brought to you by the PR Team. The PR Team is a small group of runners, just like you, who are working with me and each other to stay consistent, stay accountable, and work towards becoming better runners every day. You’ll learn why just a few minutes of plyos a week are so effective how to get started, and I’ll tell you my favorite way to add plyometrics that’s actually fun All of the runners I coach get plyometrics on their schedule and you can check out the routine I’ve made for free over on YouTube. • PRTL: "I Just Can’t Break the 4-Hour Marathon Plateau"
    Jun 25 2024
Can Matthew finally break 4 hours in Berlin? Welcome to the PR Training Lab! Go behind the scenes with me as I create a custom training plan for one lucky runner. In this episode, we feature Matthew: 🏃🏽‍♀️40 years old 🏃🏿has a fast mile time, but can’t seem to break 4 hours in the marathon 🏃🏼‍♀️Struggles with hard workouts Learn how I create a custom 14-week marathon training plan for the Berlin Marathon. Follow along with the questions I ask each runner: What is your goal? How long have you been running regularly? Do you have any current or recurring injuries? What are your RECENT (past 6-12 months) race times and distances? If you have not raced recently, but have in the past, please estimate your race fitness. If you have never raced, or not in a very long time, please estimate how fast you could run 1 mile (1.6km) as fast as possible. How many miles or kilometers per week do you typically run (do not include race weeks or taper weeks)? What is the highest amount of weekly mileage you've ever run and how long ago was that? How long is your average/most recent long run? What pace would you say is a very easy effort, relaxed pace for an average run? This is a pace so slow that you could talk the entire time almost as easily as walking. When do you want to run and rest? What are your favorite and least favorite kinds of running workouts? Do you strength train and/or cross train? What do you struggle with? This podcast got me motivated

I stumbled onto the Planted Runner website recently while researching better ways to fuel as a plant based, mature, woman runner. The first episode didn’t really focus on diet, but it did give me something I’ve been looking for -motivation. Episode was quick, informative, and entertaining and got me fired up to call myself an athlete again, and live my life accordingly. Looking forward to more episodes.
