  • The Sharpshooter by Bret "The Hitman" Hart | The Signature Move Podcast with AO Baker #18
    Jul 31 2024
Met Bret with the Hitman crown on TAIGASTYLE tee, Lee got the Pure crown on Bucket list, dapped palms with the best there is Ask Moms, I had the action figs Now if you wanna talk Sharpshooters, the best there ever will be Was when he beat Steve, made that man bleed Made him a made man at Mania 13 And Riki Choshu is the OG This episode’s signature move: The Sharpshooter. I had the chance to check something major off the ol’ bucket list the other day when I met Bret “the Hitman” Hart at The Wrestling Universe in Queens. Shook his hand. Told him that he was my favorite wrestler as a kid and the reason that I became a wrestling fan in the first place. Sidebar, I got that Hitman hat from Roots of Fight and as for the TAIGASTYLE tee, congrats to another technically sound individual, Mr. TAIGASTYLE himself, Lee Moriarty, for winning the Ring of Honor Pure Championship at Death Before Dishonor. Back to Bret. Let’s talk about The Sharpshooter. A move invented by the legendary Riki Choshu. He called it the Sasori Gatame, loosely translated from Japanese: The Scorpion Hold. Makes sense that when Sting started to use it in the late 80s, he called it The Scorpion Deathlock. Bret started using it a few years later when he left The Hart Foundation tag team to embark on a singles run. He needed a finisher. Pat Patterson brought up The Scorpion Deathlock as an option and Bret asked around for somebody to teach him how to do it. Wanna know who taught him? Konnan. Which makes sense to me because Konnan would go on to use another submission move that I always thought was dope: The Tequila Sunrise. Guy has some good taste. And Bret had some classics. He beat Mr. Perfect with the Sharpshooter to win his first Intercontinental title at SummerSlam ‘91. He used The Sharpshooter to beat Ric Flair and win his first World Title in ‘92. But without a doubt in my mind, The Sharpshooter that caused Stone Cold Steve Austin to pass out from the pain and lose the Submission Match at WrestleMania 13 in 1997 is the best there ever will be. Nowadays, you see The Sharpshooter all the time. Speedball Mike Bailey just used it to beat Mustafa Ali at Slammiversary to win the X-Division title. And Daniel Garcia’s version is called the Dragon Tamer. But in my opinion the best version was Bret’s version. So here’s to The Hitman and here’s to The Sharpshooter. + Connect with me: https://madebyaobaker.com/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@iamaobaker IG: https://www.instagram.com/iamaobaker/ X: https://x.com/iamaobaker

  • CM Punk interference is Damian Priest's best maneuver | The Signature Move Podcast with AO Baker #17
    Jul 15 2024

And still: Damian Priest Transitional title like a car with a lease? So say some. Punishment Mar disagrees. Comes to the ring, got the belt when he leaves. Keeps, by any means. Ask Drew Mac, But the South of Heaven ain’t the best move in his tool bag. ‘Cause when the ref stops watching, CM Punk’s his top option. Let’s get it poppin’ My name is AO Baker and this episode’s signature move: CM Punk. Yes, you heard that correctly: the man Phil Brooks is a maneuver. Doesn’t seem like Damian Priest has anything else that can beat Drew McIntyre. WrestleMania 40. Money in the Bank briefcase cashed in…AND NEW world heavyweight champ. But it wasn’t the South of Heaven that did the damage. It was CM Punk. Fast forward. Clash at the Castle. Drew hits the Claymore Kick but there’s no ref. Punk runs down in a ref shirt. Hits the Shane McMahon Special two-count-double-bird. Then a low blow. AND STILL world heavyweight champ….Damian Priest. Thanks to CM Punk Fast forward again. Money in the Bank. Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Priest defending against Seth Rollins. Drew cashes in his newly won briefcase and now we have a no-disqualification triple threat match. With Seth Rollins watching from outside the ring, Damian defeated Drew…after Phil Brooks, a steel chair and 15 pounds of gold put Drew down. AND STILL world heavyweight champ…Damian Priest. Thanks to CM Punk. On August 3rd, Damian Priest defends his title against Gunther. The longest reigning Intercontinental Champion ever. But more importantly, at least in this case, a man that CM Punk doesn’t have a problem with so there won’t be any CM Punk interference for Damian Priest to rely on. A lot of people have been calling Damian Priest a transitional champion. If he cares to silence those critics, he’ll have to beat Gunther on his own. No Judgement Day. No ref bumps. And no CM Punk. If he fails, his reign will soon be forgotten and the only person going “south of heaven” will be Damian Priest, himself. + Connect with me: https://madebyaobaker.com/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@iamaobaker IG: https://www.instagram.com/iamaobaker/ X: https://x.com/iamaobaker

  • How Zack Sabre Jr. Defended Orange Cassidy's Orange Punch | The Signature Move with AO Baker #16
    Jul 5 2024

Met Sabre Jr. on a Saturday Sunday he had a match vs Orange Cassidy Probably would've tapped Pockets out But he pulled one arm this way & the other arm thataway Pocket watching was the strategy Seen him throw the Orange Punch - Zack took that away Arm strength was done Forbidden Door match won - on to the G1 Connect with me: TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@iamaobaker IG: https://www.instagram.com/iamaobaker/ X: https://x.com/iamaobaker Listen to the song Signature Move by AO Baker:https://madebyaobaker.com/no-flows-barred My name is AO Baker & this episode’s Signature Move: The Orange Punch. Orange Cassidy's version of a Superman Punch. The move that led to a majority of his 157 wins and 2 International Championship reigns in AEW. That’s also the move that gave Zack Sabre Jr. the blueprint on how to defeat Orange Cassidy at this year’s Forbidden Door. The idea is simple, we’ve seen this before. Pick a part of the body, wear it down during the match and when the time is right, go in for the kill AKA, “hit your finisher, brother.” Bret Hart had the Sharpshooter so he worked the leg. So did Ric Flair to set the Figure Four up. Sabre Jr. is even more dangerous because he doesn't really have a “finisher.” Yes, there are moves that he uses often like the Zack Driver, the European Clutch, the Octopus Hold. But more often than not, he just makes some shit up on the fly. Pure improv. So you never really see what’s coming until it’s too late. So, the Forbidden Door match. Zack takes Cassidy’s right arm. Palm down, elbow up and stomps on it. He went after the fingers, the wrist, the forearm, the shoulder. The perfect defense to neutralize the best offensive weapon in Orange Cassidy’s arsenal. Yeah he hit the Orange Punch but that didn’t even knock Zack off his feet. They went back & forth. The crowd chanted “this is wrestling,” you know, because they were into the match. In the end, ZSJ picked up the W by way of verbal submission because Orange didn’t have a free hand, or foot, to tap out to this move that has no name. And while it might not be a signature move for Sabre Jr., it was a signature win for the man from The Isle of Sheppey.

  • The People's Elbow by The Rock | #14
    Apr 10 2024

    The Signature Move Podcast #14

Signature Move of the Week: The People’s Elbow

The People’s Elbow. The most electrifying move in pro wrestling, sports and entertainment. Is that the move that makes The Rock the next Undisputed WWE Universal Champion? It’s at least possible.

It was enough to beat Cody Rhodes on WrestleMania Saturday, which is more than Roman Reigns can say about The Spear.

With the champagne barely dry on Cody’s championship celebration, The Rock made sure to remind Cody of that very fact at the top of the Raw After Mania.

Back in 1998, LL Cool J was insulted when Canibus asked to borrow the microphone that was tattooed on his arm. Legacy and positioning aside, The Rock asking to borrow Cody’s newly won title, for just a moment, and then proclaiming that holding it “just feels right” probably made Cody feel just as insulted as James Todd Smith.

We know The Rock is off to film a new project called The Smashing Machine but that insult is going to find a home in the back of Cody’s mind for however long the real head of the table, the final boss, is away from The E.

We also know that whenever he comes back, Cody is The Rock’s target. “Your story with Roman Reigns is over and you did it but our story has just begun.”

The next chapter of that story might be titled And New and the last sentence might be punctuated with a People’s Elbow, courtesy of The Great One.
