Charm shares her perspective on why she decided to get involved in the Web3 space and turn her musical meditations and other works of art into NFTs, for collectors to own and share in the direct impact of the causes Charm supports. Charm and Gary discuss the opportunity for people of color in the space and why it's important that people of color are a significant part of the shaping of the Web3 space, which is happening in this very moment.

Charm discusses being influenced by the incarceration of her mother in fueling her passion to take action in her community in order to bring awareness to the injustices of the American criminal justice system. Charm and Gary discuss the problematic American justice system and what restorative justice actually looks like. They discuss the reciprocal trauma of colonization on both the colonizer and the colonized. Charm shares her perspective that reparation is necessary, the damage of the past, beginning with the colonial system needs to be restored in order for their to be true equanimity realized in America.

  • Ep 09 - Part I | Using music and art to call attention to anti-racism, restorative justice and reparations

    Part 1 of this 2 part episode, opens up with an introduction to Charm Taylor - an African-American activist, educator, musician, artist from what Charm likes to call the "future South", New Orleans, Louisiana. Gary and Charm discuss how they met at ETH Denver, one of the most well known blockchain events in the world. Charm was at ETH Denver performing a fully immersive healing art installation, along with her team of artist collaborators known as the MetaMatriarchs. Gary discusses how struck he was by the power of the installation, particularly in the setting where it was performed - at a bustling technology conference. Gary realized quickly in speaking with Charm that she had a unique story to share with the world.

    In this episode of The Soul Pod, Gary interviews Dr. Lisette Cooper. Lisette currently serves as the Vice Chair of Fiduciary Trust International and former CEO and founder of Athena Capital Advisors, an award-winning OCIO (outsourced Chief Investment Officer) and wealth management firm.

    Gary first met Lisette on a silent meditation retreat in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, where Lisette served as Gary's meditation instructor. Lisette made quite an impact on Gary during that retreat and in this conversation, Gary shares his retreat experience with Lisette for the first time. Lisette describes what has motivated her to study the dharma and live a mindful lifestyle. Lisette explains the qualities she feels are most important when a meditation student is seeking out a teacher. Lisette also talks about how she finds the time in her busy schedule as a manager for a large financial firm to practice meditation.

    Through her many years of studying dharma and practicing meditation, Lisette has befriended many of the modern influential scholars and practitioners of Buddhism and spirituality. One such individual was Ram Dass. Gary talks with Lisette about her personal experiences with Ram Dass at his home in Maui.

    Gary and Lisette also discuss what it means to be a compassionate person and why self-compassion is the foundation to be able to practice compassion toward others. Lisette discusses why she feels the body is the key to moving through trauma and, consequently, letting go of the clinging to self that hinders our soul’s evolution.
