    So far in 2024 there has been four Indigenous deaths in custody, and at the time of making this podcast 562 Indigenous deaths in custody since the 1991 royal commission.

    The Northern Territory has the highest imprisonment rate in Australia with the age of criminal responsibility, where a person can be arrested, summonsed, charged with and found guilty of a criminal offence, 12 years old.

    In this episode we speak with Pintubi, Anmatjerre and Warlpiri people about the justice system and the alarming rates of imprisonment for Yapa people and what the government should be doing to reduce this number.

  • Excessive shop prices in remote communities

    Higher food and drinks in remote stores are common across all remote communities where there is, on average, a 60% price difference, meaning Yapa living in remote communities are paying more than double the price for food and drinks.

    This episode explores the impact limited access to affordable food has on our remote communities and the difficulties Pintubi, Anmatjere and Warlpiri people face around food security and accessibility.

  • Healthcare in remote Australia

    In clinics across the Tanami Desert, situated in some of Australia’s most remote communities, Yapa could be sitting all day waiting to see a doctor or nurse, and at times be turned away.

    In this episode we talk to Pintubi, Anmatjere and Warlpiri people about their community clinics, the need for more local staff, long distances to travel for primary health care and to see specialists and the best ways to improve health care for our remote communities.

    We've had the opportunity to speak with several members of these communities, and here are their insights.

  • Bilingual Education

    In this episode we turn our attention to the educational experiences of Aboriginal children, particularly the importance of bilingual education and the challenges they face in learning two-ways.

    Despite research highlighting the importance of learning in your first language and the impact this has on a child’s education, bilingual education remains frequently underfunded and regularly challenged by politics of the day.

  • Introduction

    On the 14th of October 2023, the Australian Government asked the Australian people to vote on changing the Australian Constitution to recognise Indigenous Australians through a body called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

    This was rejected nationally.

    However, in the Northern Territories remotest communities 73% returned a YES Vote.

    The Voice to Parliament podcast is a post-referendum look at the needs of remote Australia and Indigenous peoples and urgent changes that need to be made.

    This series is a chance for Pintubi, Anmatjerre and Warlpiri people to have their say and to be heard, in their languages and on their Country.
