    Together they share their stories of living with diabetes since childhood. They explained how they have learned to recognize and work through the mental challenges that come with this journey.

    Anna Sabino MSW, CDCES has been living with T1D for over 30 years and proudly offers expert emotional health counseling for children, adults, and families with T1D.   • The Burden of Diabetes and Self-Advocacy

    In Episode 53 of Think Like a Pancreas—The Podcast, Integrated Diabetes Services clinicians Kristi Paguio and Dr. Paula Diab discuss the invisible burden of living with diabetes and the vital role of self-advocacy.

    Kristi shares her experiences as both a patient and a clinician, while Paula provides insights as a doctor. Their conversation highlights the need for better education, preparation, and understanding when working with people with diabetes, as well as tips for both medical staff and patients.

    MEET YOUR HOSTS

    Dr Paula Diab PhD, CDCES is a Family Physician and Diabetologist who runs a multi-disciplinary practice specializing in the management of chronic diseases, particularly diabetes and obesity in South Africa. Her approach is to walk the journey with her patients and to allow them to manage their disease rather than allow the disease to define who they are. She earned her undergraduate medical degree from the University of Cape Town in 2000 and then returned to her home province of KwaZulu-Natal to establish her career and continue her post-graduate studies. She is certified as a Diabetes Care and Education Specialist in the US.

    Despite carrying the burden of being the only member of the IDS clinical team without type 1 Diabetes, her skills and passion for diabetes care & education are exemplary (she did successfully manage her own gestational diabetes during her pregnancies).

    Kristi Paguio LMSW, CDCES, CSOWM is a licensed clinical social worker, diabetes care and education specialist, and certified specialist in obesity and weight management. Kristi has been working in the field of diabetes since 2007 and has had the privilege of working with people across the lifespan who are impacted by diabetes. She has experience working with adults, children, athletes, pregnancy, and weight management.

    Kristi was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2000 and has specialized in the mental and emotional aspects of diabetes since that time.

Dana serves as Research Information Liaison for the Dallas JDRF, is active on nonprofit boards, and empowers people with diabetes to thrive physically and mentally, making her a leading voice in diabetes innovation.

    Jennifer Smith, RD, LD, CDCES is the Director of Lifestyle and Nutrition for Integrated Diabetes Services. She is renowned for her expertise in nutrition, diabetes education, and athletic performance. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Nutrition and Biology from the University of Wisconsin, Jennifer is a Registered Dietitian, Licensed Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist, a certified trainer for insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, as well as a published author. Having lived with type 1 diabetes since childhood, Jennifer offers unique insight into day-to-day diabetes management, pregnancy, sports nutrition, and technology integration.

    Victor shares how he moved from a career in geology to publishing in the diabetes space was a natural evolution. He highlights the importance of effective scientific communication to both individuals and clinicians.

    Meet Your Host and His Guest

    Gary Scheiner, MS, CDCES, is the award-winning author of Think Like a Pancreas as well as numerous other books that act as guides for people living with diabetes. A Certified Diabetes Care & Education, Masters-level Exercise Physiologist, and person living with type 1 diabetes since 1985, Gary was named 2014 Diabetes Educator of the Year by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. He trained at the Joslin Diabetes Center and has dedicated his career to helping others live well with diabetes through education, advocacy, and innovation.

    Victor Van Beuren, MS, has dedicated more than 38 years to the publishing world. While publishing has shaped his career, his work with the American Diabetes Association over the past decade and a half has transformed it into his mission.
