  • Can Manual Therapy Be Done Without Thinking?
    Nov 6 2023

In today's episode, I wanted to talk about what is going through my head during manual therapy. I discovered this week that there are differing opinions about what should be going through a person's head now that we know manual therapy techniques aren't specific to anatomical structures and in many cases aren't impacting the tissue in the way that we once thought.

I want to say that this could be an entire course. My focus in this Thoughtlight was to give a brief overview of what may be going through my head just during the treatment phase of a visit during the application of a manual therapy technique. As I say toward the end: thinking never stops. It doesn't start during manual therapy and it doesn't end there, either.

  • Referral Decision Making and Care Continuity
    Jun 7 2023

In this episode, I run over the cliff notes of our recent paper "Referral Decision-Making and Care Continuity in Physical Therapist Practice," published this month in Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Journal (PTJ).

Why should you care about referral decision-making? Well, you probably do its to some degree every day. But, like most things, if you don't recognize you're doing it, you probably aren't maximizing your ability. This doesn't just entail how to refer and to whom, but a framework for thinking about referral and what key things you should be doing NOW to improve your patient outcomes.
