Three Russian oligarchs have had assets valued at over $450 million confiscated by Ukraine.

  • Resumen

  • On October 6, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) declared that it had confiscated assets valued at over Hr 17 billion ($464 million) from Mikhail Fridman, Petr Aven, and Andrei Kosogov, who are reputed to be associated with Vladimir Putin's close circle and allegedly implicated in providing financial support for the conflict in Ukraine. The SBU has taken control of a total of 20 companies owned by the oligarchs, either through direct ownership or via offshore entities.

The aforementioned entities mentioned by the SBU include financial institutions, telecommunications and information technology companies, insurance companies, and mineral water plants.

According to the SBU, the seizure aims to prevent the businessmen from transferring ownership of the companies to fictitious individuals in order to evade the transfer of assets to Ukraine's income.

Fridman, Aven, and Kosogov are connected through their participation in LetterOne, an investment company headquartered in Luxembourg.

Fridman and Aven are the co-founders of Alfa Bank, the largest private bank in Russia. They became the target of sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union following the commencement of Russia's full-scale invasion.

In March 2023, news surfaced that the duo intended to offload their ownership share in the bank to Kosogov, who had not faced any sanctions.

The SBU declared in September 2023 that Fridman was being investigated for allegedly funding the disruption of constitutional order and the usurpation of authority.

Fridman, who was born in Lviv, holds citizenship in Russia and Israel, and has resided in the United Kingdom since 2015.

In December 2022, he was apprehended in the U.K. and subsequently granted bail, as he was suspected of engaging in fraudulent activities.
