  • Meryl Evans: Captions, Clean, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious | Turn the Lens Ep35
    Jul 27 2024

George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law 34 years ago today, July 26, 1990. It literally changed our world, from cub cuts, and wide doors, to ramps and more. What is less reported is the secondary and ‘law of unintended positive consequences’ that come with inclusive design. More accessible for one is more accessible for all.

Meryl Evans has been championing the benefits of closed captions, and closed caption best practices for decades. Born ‘hearing free’ her experience with captioning is very personal, starting with the special home unit hooked up to the TV.

Doing captions well will increase the consumability of your content by orders of magnitude, for an audience far larger than the deaf or hard of hearing. Adding layers options ensures each viewer get’s the asset that matches their learning style, be that text, audio, video, or graphics.

Please join me in welcoming Meryl Evans to Turn the Lens in this World Premier Event

  • OpenAI ChatGPT 4 v4: Debate, Criteria, Responsibilities, Integrity | Turn the Lens Ep34
    Jul 13 2024

    Debate.

There has been lots of talk lately about debates, winners, and losers. I didn’t have any debate team friends in high school or college, and have not been to a real debate. If there are winners and losers, that would imply that there are rules, as victory in most competitions, from basketball to chess to Family Feud, is based on performance within the constraints, the rules, of the competition.

If basketball players carry the ball, or travel, or employ moving screens, then it’s no longer basketball (at least according the National Junior Basketball Association rules my kids played under).

So I went to Anita Iverson, my OpenAI ChatGPT to find out more about the rules, procedures, and what determines winners and losers in competitive debate.

Here’s what I learned about debates from Anita.

  • Waymo One: Autonomous, Future, Comfortable, Available | Turn the Lens Ep33
    Jun 27 2024

Waymo has been working on autonomous vehicles since it began as the Google Self Driving Car project at Google X in 2009. Spun out from it’s parent, and renamed Waymo in 2016, the iterations have developed. So today, June 2024, 15 years later, Waymo opened up it’s waitlist, and made it’s autonomous ride-hailing service up to anyone in San Francisco. It just so happens that I cleared the waitlist and took my first Waymo ride just a few days ago. And I recorded the experience.

In this exciting episode of "Turn the Lens," take a ride with me across San Francisco, from the Dogpatch to City Hall, On the ride, we’ll review some of the developments I’ve experienced first hand, autonomous transportation in general, and the experience of riding today’s start of the art autonomous vehicle.

The future is here, it’s just not evenly distributed. You can get a taste for yourself. Download the app, and take an autonomous ride. If for some reason, that’s not in the short term future, share this ride with me.

    May 14 2024

Welcome back for another episode of ‘Turn the Lens’ with our ongoing conversations with ChatGPT. We've been hitting the heavy topics of ethics and explainable AI. And I think there are some real challenges there that, that we have to overcome.

But I want to do something a little bit more fun. So in this episode, we're going to do a different type of project, not so heavy and deep, but hopefully, have some fun with ChatGPT and get some answers. So here we go.

  • Eric Law: Lumber, Robotics, Innovation, Sustainability | Turn the Lens Ep31
    Apr 29 2024

Eric Law went searching for robotics opportunities in the construction industry, where machines have been used for decades, starting with earth-moving steam shovels in the 19th century. Recently, drones have taken on some of the more difficult and dangerous tasks. Eric discovered numerous opportunities for robotics, but one stood out due to its size, scale, and ubiquity: wood waste from construction and demolition.

**The Problem:** While steel and concrete have established reuse and recycling streams, 37 million tons of dimensional wood from construction sites are burned or buried in landfills in the US each year. This represents about half of the virgin softwood dimensional lumber produced for US consumption annually.

**The Cause:** Why couldn’t this wood be easily reused? Metal fasteners. Nails, screws, staples, and other fasteners in the used wood could cause significant damage and potentially injury if they were put back through the milling process. The saws, planers, and other equipment are designed to easily cut and process wood, not metal.

**The Solution:** Use robots to quickly and efficiently remove the metal from the used wood, certify its status as 'metal-free' with a metal detector, and then return it to the lumber supply.

Eric partnered with Andrew Gillies and Alex Thiele to create a robot that removes metal so the wood can be reused, and a company to commercialize it. The result is Urban Machine.

Join us as we dive into the intersection of robotics, construction, and sustainability. Eric and his team are using technology behind the headlines—artificial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning, etc.—to economically do the dirty job of removing nails, screws, and fasteners, so the lumber can reenter the market and stay out of the incinerator or landfill.

  • OpenAI ChatGPT 4: Influence, Nudge, Direct, Tune | Turn the Lens Ep28
    Feb 27 2024

ChatGPT busted into our consciousness less than 18 months ago, and has since vacuumed up all the headlines, sucked all the oxygen out of the room, pick your metaphor, $Billions of new investment adding fuel to a raging fire.

Continuing on our exploration of the virtual, digital, and augmentations, and inspired by the very creative Yadin Porter de León, I decided to take some of my questions, right to the source, and interview OpenAI ChatGPT-4.

And the specific context? I like many of you, signed up and started training our own custom version of ChatGPT, just like Sam Altman said we could at the OpenAI Developer’s conference Sept 2023.

‘Introducing GPT’s - You can now create custom versions of ChatGPT that combine instructions, extra knowledge and any combination of skills’

    https://openai.com/blog/introducing-gpts

I got mine, loaded it with data, and to double-check my work, asked what it remembered learning, and the answer was…..can you say statelessness? Needless to say, I have questions.

So I went to the source and interviewed ChatGPT. Full disclosure, recorded the day of the AT&T issues, for whatever reason, was having connectivity issues, so I edited out most of the ‘can you hear me now?’

But I got some great answers, and now have a better understanding of terms like Influence, Nudge, Direct, and Tune, on top of the heavy lift that goes into training one of these in the first place.
