  • The text is a selection of excerpts from a book by G.K. Chesterton, arguing that the growth of capitalism will create a “Servile State” where the rich control not just the economy, but also art, science, religion and even the definition of morality. Chesterton predicts that this state will rely on a combination of propaganda, social control, and increasingly harsh punishment to maintain its power. He argues that the rich will be able to manipulate the laws and public opinion in their favour, creating a society where dissent is effectively impossible.
