In this episode Contessa Akin shares her authentic and raw story of being abandoned by her biological mother at the age of 3, with her sister, on the side of the road. She then experienced sexual abuse, and abuse by a close family member who liked to stop her breathing and bring her back to life, She never felt safe, and grew up hating life and hating herself and very angry. All of this trauma led her to make many bad decisions and have traumatic experiences. But she's proud to say, she overcame that past. And she's helped thousands of women overcome their past traumas as well. With years of personal experience, professional training, and deep spiritual work, she discovered a process that finally helped her to heal from abuse. Now her mission is to help others heal too.

In Episode 26 you'll hear Kimberly's inspiring story of finding resilience; embracing her destiny and overcoming adversity. She shares the harsh realities of life from the perspective of an abandoned little child in kinship care growing up into adulthood. It is an authentic true story with no filters.

Kimberly confronts the societal issues that many people struggle with today such as pedophilia, domestic violence, child abuse, abusive relationships, and teen pregnancy. As you listen on you will sense the trauma, abandonment and pain as well as God’s divine intervention in her life that allowed her to overcome and be who she is today.

She now holds two degrees; one in human growth & development/psychology and the other in theology.

At age 25 she brought forth her trial sermon under the leadership of the late Dr. Charles Mack. Kimmy has served on the ministerial staff at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church and completed four years of conference studies. She also fulfilled 5 years as a director of the liturgical dance ministry on various capacities. In May 2005, She was ordained an Elder through the Philadelphia/Baltimore Conference and was able to pastor a multicultural mission church in Maryland.

She is passionate about dance as a form of expression and continues to support all liturgical dance ministries. Through this endeavor she hopes to reach out to the youth, adults, and churches worldwide. She believes that God will get all the glory in her life. Her favorite scripture is Psalm 91:14-16.

In Episode 25, you'll hear Amy's story. She was barely surviving, sick and in pain. She'd been to every doctor imaginable. No one had an answer. Doctors kept throwing medications at her and she kept getting sicker. She didn't feel seen, heard or believed. She and her husband ultimately traveled to Johns Hopkins for their Hail Mary, Amy was down to only 85lbs. And they had no answers. Amy was done. She was ready to give up.

Amy only moved from surviving to thriving when she began to listen and trust her body over the doctors which was not easy. She took her power back and used her research experience to "guinea pig" herself. She began to slowly move out of the darkness and despair that had been her life for too many years to count. She did this by reading books, listening to functional practitioners on podcasts and investing in herself. My type A personality was being put to the test and I was determined to figure my way out of this. I tried everything and anything and didn’t realize I was trying to manic-heal my way out of my illnesses. It was frustrating and demoralizing because I was doing everything “right” but I couldn’t fully heal.

It was when she reconnected with her intuition and found a connection to a higher power that massive shifts began to occur. Mother Nature’s cycles and plants have been a game changer for her. She was led to the “power of the plants” by an old book of her Gram’s-it was like a message from Heaven. It felt like a sign, so she moved forward in this direction. This led her to embark on making her own herbal formulations, to become an herbalist, study homeopathy and became trained as a trauma informed breathwork facilitator.

Amy’s mission is to educate and empower others to be their own best healers by reconnecting with the innate intelligence of their body with Mother Nature. Reminding themselves that they get to choose what is best for their body. Amy does this by teaching them how to re-awakening to their intuition as true healing only occurs when we address the whole package. Her approach is a mind-body-spirit one which uses the “power of the plants”, mindfulness and breath to assist you in transforming into whom you are meant to be.
