  • Unforgiven is realistic and not cynical, it is serious about westerns, but it does not digress and is ready to give a few interludes of philosophical reflection.

Unforgiven is a hard country - with grown-up children - with bloody innards, and it takes place in the West, where people kill each other for money, pride, or in the name of revenge. There are exposed plot lines, outlawed murders, and moral highlands to ride on, but all of this is part of Munny's vision of his own past.

Unforgiven is less an action western than a somber reflection on life and the passing of the torch. It may not have the bloody violence of older Westerns, and it may not be so much about robbing banks and having fun with the gunslingers, murderers, cowards, and law-enforcers who have made the genre great while taking the time to show psychological measures.

Most Westerners focus on killing bandits for money, while Unforgotten focuses on the emotions of brotherhood, hatred, anger, and grief that most Westerners tend to ignore. While the film exposes the false exploits that make Eastwood such a star, it can show just as effectively how past sins can destroy good intentions.

Unforgiven (1992) won four Oscar nominations, including best picture, which speaks to its lasting impact on the film. Although Unforgiving has rightly devoured so many well-deserved Oscars, it has lost none of its lusters, but given its proud budget.
