In the third part of the Dillinger saga, the Terror Gang finds itself being whittled down bit by bit, with the remaining five core members taking to the vast American highways, first to Florida, then a trip back home in Indiana to quickly rob a bank. Barely making it out alive, they flee to Tucson, Arizona, where the journey hits a bit of a snag...

In the continuing coverage of Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger, we trace the Terror Gang's steps after the deadly jailbreak in Lima, Ohio, which included daring robberies of police stations for guns and ammo, as well as more banks in Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The game of cops and robbers was growing quite dire as both sides upped the ante.

We also meet the woman who became the love of Dillinger's life, Mary "Billie" Frechette, as well as expand on some of Dillinger's lesser-known movements after his release from prison.

The Great Depression was a desperate time for the US and the world at large, and it spawned a whole host of criminals and gangs looking to take what they couldn't get. John Dillinger's crime spree of robbing banks and shooting back at cops across the Midwest only lasted about a year, but in that time he became something of a folk hero, as he expertly executed heist after heist, using a method he'd studied intensely during a 9 year prison stint.

In part one of this two-parter, learn about Dillinger's early years, as well as all the fearsome ways the rest of the world was responding to the economic havoc. Hitler sure was busy. Also learn why Allison has a bit of a personal connection to the story of Dillinger.

Allison and Jayson Blair conclude their series on the Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders, and they've brought on former FBI profiler Julia Cowley of The Consult podcast to answer questions and go over theories!

    ***

In this special three-part series, Allison and friend Jayson Blair of the Silver Linings Handbook are back together again to talk about a case that continues to haunt Oklahoma nearly 50 years later.

Lori Farmer, Denise Milner, and Michele Guse were among dozens of Girl Scouts who arrived at Camp Scott in Mayes County Oklahoma in June of 1977. After only one night, a camp counselor found the three girls brutally slain around 150 yards away from their shared tent. After a massive manhunt, police found their suspect: a local Cherokee and escaped convict by the name of Gene Leroy Hart, a man with both a violent past and a standing of merit in his community as a former high school football star.

But despite the evidence against him, convincing both whites and Natives alike with a long distrust of law enforcement to believe he did it was a whole other matter. This case has been compared to OJ Simpson for numerous reasons, which you'll soon see.

Allison and Jayson last left you in Part 1 with police beginning their questioning of Lloyd Lee Welch, a man who they'd initially thought a witness to the kidnapping of Katherine and Sheila Lyon at the Wheaton Plaza mall in 1975 by their original suspect, Ray Mileski. However, Welch soon takes police on a dark and murky path that leads to him becoming the prime suspect in the girls' disappearance. Chances are if you had any leading theories about this case in the previous episode, they'll probably go out the window by the time you get to the end of this one.

And speaking of theories, Allison and Jayson both give theirs at the end.

In this joint episode with the Silver Linings Handbook podcast, Allison and Jayson tackle what is to date the oldest no-body homicide case to receive a conviction in the US.

In 1975, sisters Sheila (12) and Katherine (10) Lyon were going for a slice of pizza at a popular Baltimore-area shopping mall when they disappeared without a trace. But there were witnesses, and one of them helped generate the sketch of a man it would take nearly 40 years to circle back around to: Lloyd Lee Welch.

Journalist and true crime author Mark Bowden called the Lyon sisters disappearance a case that struck at suburbia's idea of itself, and his book, THE LAST STONE (a major source for this episode) ,details law enforcement's labyrinthine investigation and interrogation of Welch and his family, a story that takes you to the heart of Appalachia and other dark corners that went decades before being exposed to the light of truth.
