  • 294.Mirror vs. Magnifying Glass--Transforming Your Life with Deborah Johnson
    Aug 13 2024

On one of our camp outings when I was a young attentive girl scout, we took a magnifying glass and held it just right in the sun to attempt to fry an egg. I don’t actually remember if the egg ever got firm enough to eat, but it taught us the power of sunlight in creating intense heat. The principle behind this is the magnifying glass’s ability to gather and focus light energy. This demonstrates the significant power of concentrated effort, both in a literal and metaphorical sense. Mirrors, like magnifying glasses, can also be used to harness and concentrate sunlight to generate intense heat, although in different ways. T

he metaphor of the mirror versus the magnifying glass highlights two distinct approaches to personal growth and understanding human behavior. When we use a mirror, we engage in self-examination, taking an honest and introspective look at our own actions, thoughts, and emotions. This practice fosters self-awareness, allowing us to recognize our strengths and weaknesses, make necessary changes, and ultimately grow as individuals. In this episode, we will look at the importance of self-reflection, the dangers of focusing on others’ faults with practical steps to take and how to shift our focus from criticizing others to improving ourselves.

Are streamlined solutions of organization a learned skill or is it just an innate ability to be put systems in place? Our interview today is with “Simplicity Expert,” Miriam Oritz y Pino. She says clutter is only part of the story with clients struggling to break out of self-defeating patterns, keeping them stuck. Many who are experiencing life at mid-career or halftime of life are faced with lots of “stuff” that has been accumulated for many years, both physically and mentally. It can be handed down or passed down from family members who have either downsized or passed.

“Stuff” also refers to “stuff we have to do.” So how do we increase our productivity and eliminate what is not needed to do our best work? We explore that in today’s podcast as we approach discernment, structure and consistency, reverse engineering and our desired outcome.

  • 292.Top Dog-Is it Worth Being Your Own Boss? with Deborah Johnson
    Jul 30 2024

Being your own boss, or the "top dog," can be a rewarding yet challenging endeavor. First, autonomy is a significant draw; you have the freedom to set your own schedule, pursue projects aligned with your passions, and make decisions that shape your business's direction. This level of control can lead to a deep sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, knowing that you're charting your own course. Additionally, the potential for financial gains can be substantial if your venture succeeds, offering opportunities for significant earnings and wealth accumulation over time. Also, being your own boss often inspires a culture of innovation and creativity, where you can experiment with new ideas and approaches with less constraints. This is especially appealing to creatives.

However, the path to becoming your own boss isn't without its challenges. It requires a high level of self-discipline and motivation as you navigate the complexities of running a business. Until I approached the mid-career stage of my life, I didn’t fully realize what an entrepreneur was or that most of my work throughout my career had been based on an entrepreneurial mindset. At this point, some of the principles discussed here were revealed and affirmed in my life. The freedom that an entrepreneurial journey brings is appealing to many who have this mindset, though it’s not an easy path. It takes work, work and more work! In this podcast, we will cover some of the work it takes, as well as the benefits it creates.
