the most annoying thing I've ever read
Revisado: 10-13-23
I love horror/thriller/paranormal books, and this was too much for me at times. I had to skip most of one chapter. Everything dragged out wayyy too long and was over the top in a very irritating fashion. Without giving too many spoilers, just know this is a very prolonged story of a villain who just won't go away like some sort of murderous ingrown toenail. I hated it viscerally, but compelled myself to see how the sh!tshow ended by listening on 2x speed and skipping ahead. Also agree that the narrator's pronunciation was terrible at times. ALL-co-hol instead of alcohol is permanently stuck in my brain. Also I've developed a phobia of puppets. Dear lord I need a support group after this whirlwind of wtf.

Historia
In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three. A teenage girl who isn’t allowed outside, not after last time. A man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory. And a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible. An unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all.

An absolute treasure
Revisado: 06-13-23
Outstanding narrator & outstanding story. The "twist" is not what makes it great- it's the emotions and profound observations on life. I had a hard time with the opening scene because I am hypersensitive to animal cruelty, but I'm glad I stuck with it. That was the only very difficult scene to get through. I felt very emotionally invested in all of the characters, and so drawn into the house that I felt I was living the story. The narrator really brought it to life in a way that reading it myself never would have. Worth all the hype in my eyes.

Absolute masterpiece

I am so sad about finishing this book. It's rare to read something so good you just don't know what can possibly follow it. The narration is unparalleled. I am not a King fan and hate gory, disturbing books. This was not that, though it had its intense moments. I wanted it to go on much longer, and dearly hope King is not done with this world.

a little disappointing
Revisado: 07-07-22
It kept me interested enough to finish the story, but the twist ending did not come as any sort of shock, and I didn't feel anything for any of the characters. Avery isn't terribly likeable, and neither were the rest. Felt like a very dragged out episode of Law & Order. Entertaining enough that I don't regret listening to it, but I'm not rushing to listen to more by these authors.

Deeply Emotional
Revisado: 08-31-21
I'm having trouble finding words to describe how connected I felt to this book. No, it's not an action packed thriller, horror story, or anything of the like. It's a fascinating look into the psychology of trauma and how our choices follow us through life. Maude is so well written and the entire story so believable through how emotionally evocative it is. There are twists and a mystery that you will want to keep listening to uncover the truth of. The ending had me bawling. Just a beautifully written book. If you look for stories that make you feel something, you'll enjoy this.

Excellent narration & story!
Revisado: 07-06-21
My only criticism is that I would have liked a little more detail and time spent on the actual Darkling Bride story and history. I loved the family mystery in this though, and how it kept me guessing. The author did a wonderful job of world building and creating complex characters who you felt for. I'm definitely going to check out her other books now! No, this isn't a bodice ripper romance, but it's a heartfelt one that is still satisfying.
The narrator was good, but had a habit of pronouncing words very strangely (ex. "toile" as "toyle", "genuine" as "genu-wine," "Thomas" as "TH-omas," to name a few). Just made me go "huh??" at certain points.

Great narration, awful story
Revisado: 06-04-21
The only likeable main character was the dog. I'm sorry I stuck with this story. I kept with it because it came highly recommended from a source I normally trust, and I wanted to see how the storylines would eventually come together. When they finally did, it felt so contrived and cheesey. I felt nothing but annoyance and disgust for the characters, so I didn't care at all when the big secrets and horrors were revealed. I don't think the author ever even described how the characters looked, other than one was very attractive, so I was never even able to picture these vapid people. Could have been better had it just focused on one storyline and built some connection with the characters. I will say the narration was good, and is the reason I'm giving this two stars overall instead of one.

Decent story, hated the narration
Revisado: 01-25-21
Unlike many reviewers I actually hated the narration for this. I had to slow it down to even understand her hectic, gaspy pace, and I never got over the monotone, almost growly voice. Very grating.
I wanted to like the story more than I did. In the end, I felt the author sacrificed some potential substance for the sake of flowery verse. I got a lot of poetic detail, but never built much authentic connection with the characters. They were vehicles for the story more so than entities in their own right. Henry was a little more fleshed out than Addie, but something still felt flat.
At times the love story just felt too YA-like for my taste, too. Overall an intriguing concept and a story that kept me interested to know where it was going, but I was ready for it to end.

If you're a textile artist, you will adore this
Revisado: 12-21-20
I design woven and knit fabrics for a living, so I was particularly fond of how passionately Esther described her joy for designing, and how accurately the process was described. I was very impressed by the author's knowledge of weaving and how well researched everything was. I felt emotionally swept up in the story, too. It was hard to stop listening for any length of time. Slight spoilers below!
My only complaints are that I was really ready for a happier ending, though it was a realistic ending, and I was disappointed that Bisby's character seemed so flat compared to the others. You never learn much about him other than he's a nice guy, great weaver, and takes care of his nephew. I wanted more in that regard, but otherwise an excellent book with a historic backdrop that was fascinating to learn about.

Incredibly moving story and performance!
Revisado: 11-02-20
This is my second Laura Purcell book, and I think I have a new author to add to my top 5 favorites. I listened to this right after finishing The Silent Companions, which was a fantastic book and left me hungry for more gothic horror of this quality. I was surprised that I wound up being even more impressed with The Poison Thread. The book is achingly well-written and the performances for Ruth and Dorothea are top-notch. Ruth especially came vividly alive for me and my heart felt for her every moment. There were times when Ruth's performance was so powerful I had to turn off the book and wait until I wasn't driving/at my desk/etc. and could afford to be fully absorbed in her emotions. The story itself will keep you entranced and guessing right up until the last sentence. Some of the scenes were hard to listen to because of how disturbing they were, but there was nothing superfluous or simply there for shock effect, I felt. Everything was essential to the whole of the tale. I would love so much to see this adapted as a film. If you're a fan of Victorian Gothic stories or psychological thrillers, do not miss this one!!
