While it’s strange to say anything about the Holocaust is fantastic, Joel Rosenberg has written a fantastic book. That combined with Christopher Lane’s narration make The Auschwitz Escape truly a 5+ star novel. Yes, there are parts that are hard to listen to but it’s also important we never forget the suffering and cruelty of the Holocaust.

Well Crafted Historical Fiction
Reviewed: 06-14-22
Take My Hand is an eye opening, important book to read. Classified as historical fiction the book is written around events that occurred just 50 to 60 years ago - not that long ago in the grand scheme of things. The story is based on the true events that lead to the prosecution of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare for failing to protect poor or mentally challenged females from forced sterilization. The storyline kept my interest from beginning to end. Loren Daggett did a fantastic job narrating.

An Interesting Read for 2020
Reviewed: 08-11-20
I am a huge Nevil Shute fan, having read and listened to many of his books throughout the years. I have been putting off listening to the last 3 of his books on Audible, The pandemic, protests, and politics of 2020 was the perfect time to listen to one of my last few books. Beyond the Black Stump certainly didn’t disappoint. Being back in Nevil Shute’s 1955 world was a breathe of fresh air. No sappy love story, no silly heroics, no “give me a break” moments, just a good solid story. The book was also interesting to listen to during the protest time of Black Lives Matter. There is both the adequated viewpoint towards the Australian aborigines and any persons of color, as well as the liberal broadminded viewpoint of people are people. The book is definitely full of 1950s morals and customs which are interesting to evaluate in today’s climate. The story takes place in the vast Australian outback and a small town in Oregon. It is a refreshing tale of two people, falling in love and trying to resolve their cultural differences. The narrator does a great job. I highly recommend Beyond The Black Stump.

I resisted using a credit for Speaks the Nightbird for the longest time. I just didn’t think I would enjoy 30+ hours listening to a story set in 1699. Oh how foolishly wrong I was. The thirty hours flew by. Speaks the Nightbird tackles a sad part of early America and the mob mentality behind witchcraft. The story also delves into the day to day hardships of life during Colonial times. There are a multitude of characters in the novel and Edoardo Ballerini does an excellent job narrating all of them. The novel contains history, mystery and romance. It’s has nail biting suspense and intrigue. Speaks the Nightbird is one of those audio books you just can’t stop listening to. It is a credit well spent.

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

I read Water for Elephants years ago when it came out as a paperback novel. I really liked it then but I loved the audible version. Using two different narrators for young and old Jacob makes the story even more poignant. Even if you’ve previously read Sara Gruen’s novel I highly recommend listening to Water for Elephants.

Lest We Forget
Reviewed: 08-23-19
The Medallion is a story that I won’t soon forget. True events inspired the author to write this book, as she explains at the end of the story. The Medallion is a tale of war, before, during and after. It is also a story of courage, sacrifice and love. The author relates the story through two couples torn apart in war torn Poland. For me the book started slowly but soon swept me into the lives of Sophie, Rosa and Itzhak. Several times throughout the book I was brought to tears. Stina Nielsen’s narration is well done, with the exception of her British accent. The Medallion is a credit well spent!

Searching
Reviewed: 07-07-19
I love narration by George Newbern. After listening to a book Newbern narrated I looked for another. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Boys Life by Robert McCammon. When I discovered Gone South by the same author and narrated by George Newbern my search was over. It also happens that Gone South is a book in which all the main characters are searchers. You can’t help but feel sympathy for the way things go south for Dan Lambert. Yet Dan doesn’t wallow. The author shows, through Dan, the power of redemption. Arden, whose beautiful face is marred by a birthmark, is searching for the “Bright Girl” to heal her. Dan reluctantly lets Arden join him in his travel as he flees from yet another searcher - the bounty hunter who wants the reward for capturing Dan. It’s an absurd cast of characters that the author humanizes in surprising ways. Gone South is much better than my review sounds. I highly recommended the book, the author and the narrator.
