hard to follow
Reviewed: 06-16-23
Ok so I am ADHD but I found this so hard to follow that after ch 3 I had to go back to the beginning and start over because I had no clue what was going on. there are too many characters to remember and my ADD brain can't take it.

Story
It is 1893, and the first generation of immigrants who came to America for the promise of free land and a good life for their children have finally achieved their dreams. They labored hard on the land and now have a bountiful heritage to pass on to the next generation. However, many of the young people aren't interested in becoming farmers - they have aspirations of their own. Thorliff Bjorklund has been writing stories and plays since he was a young boy and longs to attend college to study journalism. But his father has other plans for him and refuses to agree.

the narrator was cringey to the max. the Norwegian accent was awful and sounded like oaken from frozen. Honestly though the female southerners may have been the worst. absolutely tragic. I couldn't even focus on the story because the narration was so distracting.

This is not actually the next book in the series
Reviewed: 04-10-23
This book shows up like it is the next part of this series but there are actually 14 (!) books in between this one and "Blessing in Disguise" which means this one makes absolutely no sense when you pick it up right after that story ends because about 10-15 years seem to have passed. There are 4 mini series' in between them, "Return to red river", "Daughters of Blessing" "Home to Blessing" and "Song of Blessing". I did not finish this book, admittedly, once finding this out, so I can't speak on the story but I do not enjoy the narration. I like the narrator in the other books, but in this one she is almost comically animated in a weird way. Anyway check out the other books first.

Story
After three long years of scrimping and saving to buy tickets for their passage to America, Roald and Ingeborg Bjorklund, along with their son, Thorliff, finally arrive at the docks of New York City. It was the promise of free land that fed their dream and lured them from their beloved home high above the fjords of Norway in 1880. As they join the throngs of countless immigrants passing through Castle Garden, the Bjorklunds soon discover that nothing is as they had envisioned it.

I love everything about this book. the story, the narrators voice everything. it is truly a "little house for adults" series and the narrators voice is so nice to listen to.

Not a fan of the reader. She's way too proper sounding, almost snobby. The story was just okay. it definitely starts slow and gets somewhat better but I dont look forward to it like other Jeanette Oake stories.

The narrator ended every sentence with a "....?" type inflection and I know it's a romantic fiction but it's just way too unrealisticly lovey dovey for me. I kept finding my eyes rolling.
I couldn't finish it.
