I was greatly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I was not familiar with the author and the title made me think it was just another cozy mystery. However, there was a great plot and some potential love interests. The only drawback is that the reader pronounced some words very unusually. It was distracting until I became used to it but I never was able to fully grasp why they pronounced been, again, and other such words so differently. The rest of their dialect was exactly how I would pronounce the words in the Midwest USA. Does Vancouver really have that different pronunciation for those few words?

New narrator

This book has a different narrator than the previous books in the series. I had trouble really sinking into the story with the new narrator - the voice just didn't seem to fit the snarky characters as well. overall the story was good, about on par with the previous books in the series.

This book was not really my style. There was too much sexual content and it was on the darker side - not that there was a lot of it, but a lot of discussion and visualization. I wish there was more substance to the story. The readers did well though. The characters had unique voices.

l was a bit skeptical at first because I didn't really like the sample snippet of audio, but this book was wonderful. It was full of twists and turns and new ways of looking at Wonderland. I found that I even enjoyed the audio sample part when I heard it again in context. I thought Alice's back story was very unique and a modern way to explain her current problems and difficulty accepting what she was seeing. There was more depth to her character than just a curious girl who falls down a rabbit hole. I would definitely recommend this book to other readers.

I struggled with this story. Overall the story has a good premise, but falls a little short. The MC is a bit too naive for me. I understand that the author was trying to show her as an innocent angel but I think it was overdone. How long has she been on Earth? She's been here long enough to have established relationships within the community, but yet she doesn't understand several basic things. The narrator over-pronounced the letter "t" which created a stilted dialogue and detracted from the story.

Great book, bad title

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

I was hesitant listening to this story based on the title. There are so many hidden meanings that it could be trying to convey. Luckily, I saw that the Kindle version was renamed so I decided to give it a shot. I really enjoyed the book. It starts off as a kind of bully romance, but the MC acknowledges it and works to break their relationship. As you go through the book, you start to understand the reasons behind the bullying. As the MC learns more about the boy she can't seem to separate herself from, she begins to find a lot of good in him and begins to fall for him more and more and the relationship becomes less toxic. In the end, I was happy they were together and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. I was sucked into the story very quickly and became emotionally invested. The books seemed to go quickly and I don't think I would have liked listening to each one individually as it would have broken up the story too much. As a complete series read/listen it was great and I miss hearing about the characters now that it is over.

Not what I was expecting

The story was not what I am used to reading. The demons mentioned in the summary are metaphorical, not actual. This is a story set in the real world and the MC is a girl dealing with serious depression and trauma. There were points in the book that I contemplated stopping reading because the MC was dealing with so much and the book became very depressing, but I stuck with it and there was character growth and change resulting in a happy ending. This book is good for readers that like to get into the psyche of characters and really understand them from the inside out.

Dystopian

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 01-26-19

Sawyer is a pretty typical dysopian main character with a gritty, keep to yourself attitude in the beginning of the book. There are a few aspects of the story that are a bit scifi with robots and carbons (robotic people) running the world and destroying any humans found. The book doesn't get too technical and still maintains elements of humanity, love, relationships, and betrayals that add a wonderful complexity to the story. Sawyers character grows and changes throughout the book, adding depth to her character that I didn't see in the beginning. I was drawn into the story and emotionally affected when both negative and positive events unfold. I stayed up way too late at night, not wanting the story to end and I immediately downloaded the second book and started it after finishing this book.

Twists and Turns

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 01-26-19

There are several plot twists and turns in this second book of the series. Sawyer is definitely dealing with some internal struggles and feelings of depression regarding her self-identity and the lost of those she cares about. Can she ever allow herself to let people in and love again? I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next audio book to be released.
