Story
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Utterly dull
Reviewed: 02-03-25
I could not get through this book, story is as dull as can be. The main character does/thinks the same thing over and over and over.

Story
If I had to pick a bride of convenience, my first choice would not be Peach Maloney. My 50th choice would not be Peach. Top spot on my list of occupational hazards? Yes. Royal pain in the crumpets? Yes. A bride of convenience? No. But I've unexpectedly gone from royal bodyguard to monarch, having inherited a crown that was stolen from my family long before my birth. The kicker? In order to take the throne, I must find a wife. Have I mentioned Peach would not have been my 100th choice? But I've no other options, and she needs a favor that my new position can fulfill quite nicely.

I love a good rom-com story, but this one I could not even finish. The performances are great and the characters are fun, but the writing is like a middle-schooler wrote it. Go-Go Gadget penis? Knob? Tally whacker? Yeah... all penile references, but each one made me cringe and internally groan with disappointment. The female references were just as bad. So many crass, childish references to 'romance' in the first few chapters, that I had to stop listening. Those childish references were so frequent that it ruined the story. Too bad, as the premise of of the story is fun and I was looking forward to it. I knew this was not a romance romance, and have listed to tons and tons of similar rom-coms, but the language was just so juvenile, and not even only occasionally; it was all the time. Too bad

Story
“As Albert Einstein almost certainly never said, everyone is a genius—but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” So begins Katie Spalding’s spunky takedown of the Western canon, and how genius may not be as irrefutably great as we commonly understand. While most of us may never become Einstein, it may surprise you to learn that there’s probably a bunch of stuff you can do that Einstein couldn’t. And, as Spalding shows, the famous prodigies she explores here were quite odd by any definition.

I found it definitely was entertaining. I would listen more from this author if this mildly naughty humor is included. A nice, light and educational listen…

Story
In Jasper Fforde's Great Britain, circa 1985, time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very, very seriously. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection.

I found this story to be delightful and fun. Lighthearted wit to keep me occupied during my long drives. I look forward to the rest of this series.
