Whether he is evoking the blind carnage of the Tet offensive, the theatrics of his fellow Americans, or the unraveling of his own illusions, Wolff brings to this work the same uncanny eye for detail, pitiless candor, and mordant wit that made This Boy's Life a modern classic.

I listened this book twice in a row. This is the second autobiography I read/ listened by Wolf. I admire the economy of words, stoic attitude to adversity and accomplishment and the sense of humor, which in my opinion makes this book a modern classic

Down and out in Paris II
Reviewed: 11-25-24
Orwell is my lit. Hero. His immersive, investigative, journalistic writing is what I see in Chisholm’s Paris. I thoroughly enjoy chisholm’s narrative style, its economy, precision and layedness. Through the eye of self inspiring Parian waiter, the writer generously and physically present the lives in Paris, or life in general. It is heavy, unrelenting, cyclical and we like/ enjoy it. In that sense, are we not all Parisian waiters?
I have to say this: the narration is world class. I will definitely follow the works of both artists.

Story
So begins Chloé Cooper Jones’s bold, revealing account of moving through the world in a body that looks different than most. Jones learned early on to factor “pain calculations” into every plan, every situation. Born with a rare congenital condition called sacral agenesis which affects both her stature and gait, her pain is physical. But there is also the pain of being judged and pitied for her appearance, of being dismissed as “less than.”

Story
After several years living abroad, the fictional protagonist of Galatea 2.2 - Richard Powers - returns to the US as Humanist-in-Residence at the enormous Center for the Study of Advanced Sciences. There he runs afoul of Philip Lentz, a cognitive neurologist intent upon modeling the human brain. Lentz involves Powers in an outlandish and irresistible project: to train a neural net on a canonical list of Great Books. Through repeated tutorials, the device grows gradually more worldly, until it demands to know its own name, sex, race, and reason for existing.

To paraphrase Nietzsche, ( the original is quoted in this book) if I can find a proper expression, the idea or subject is dead.
But These two things I hold truth , first it is transformative second the prof. Answered himself with his memory book, he would not, “ free to desist”

A confrontation with the IRS, Little League, trumpet lessons, and enough clutter to bury her alive - Jackson spins them all into an indelible reminder that every bit as thrilling as a murderous family in a haunted house is a happy family in a new home.
