Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Brought back memories
Revisado: 03-08-20
Having been raised Southern Baptist by a racist father in the Catholic part of Louisiana during the civil rights era, this memoir brought recollections of paranoia and isolation that will be with me forever. Well done!

Historia
Deborah Fallows has spent a lot of her life learning languages and traveling around the world. But nothing prepared her for the surprises of learning Mandarin - China's most common language - or the intensity of living in Shanghai and Beijing. Over time, she realized that her struggles and triumphs in studying learning the language of her adopted home provided small clues to deciphering behavior and habits of its people, and its culture's conundrums.

Grating to listen to - better to read the book
Revisado: 07-15-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No, it was not. This should be read by someone that can sound out pinyin well. The narrator did not make any effort to pronounce the Chinese phrases.
This book is better in print if you cannot find someone to read it that understands how to sound out pinyin.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Catherine Byers?
Someone who at least can read the Mandarin phrases with more accurate enunciation. Catherine Byers reading was extremely grating to listen to when you understand Mandarin.
Was Dreaming in Chinese worth the listening time?
No, because Catherine Byers did not understand how to pronounce the pinyin at all. Her reading of the Mandarin phrases was so poorly done that it makes me want to stop listening, which I did so I never finish the book.

Historia
Growing up in a family of political journalists - and daughter of President Reagan’s White House social secretary - Ali Wentworth rebelled against her blue-blood upbringing, embracing Hollywood, motorcycles, even a few wildly inappropriate marriage proposals. Today she is an acclaimed comedic actress and writer, former Oprah regular, wife of political and media star George Stephanopoulos, and a mother who lets her two girls eat cotton candy before bed. Though she’s settled down, her rebellious nature thrives in her comedy and her view of her crazy world.

Not Funny Enough
Revisado: 03-05-12
What would have made Ali in Wonderland better?
In a nutshell, it simply was not funny. It was everyday chit chat for waspy people. Nothing deep or over the top clever or funny.
What was most disappointing about Ali Wentworth’s story?
I expected it to have humor that was clever. I enjoy David Sedaris's work and was hoping for another voice that is in the same funny, smart manner, but it was not.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator try to sound funny but she simply was not. She just comes across as trying too hard to be funny when the materials was not.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Ali in Wonderland?
All of it, because all her stories are not worth the time to listen to except if you were making small talk at a party or with a friend.
