Tucker's Way is a Treasure

I was completely captivated by Johnson's heartwarming, heart-wrenching novel. His exquisitely drawn protagonist is an unlikely heroine. The settings are masterfully drawn and the plot races along from one twist to another. I'm heading straight for Johnson's next book. If you're a fan of Where the Crawdads Sing or The Orphan Train, this book is for you.

Story
We meet Andrew Leland as he’s suspended in the liminal state of the soon-to-be blind: he’s midway through his life with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that ushers those who live with it from sightedness to blindness over years, even decades. He grew up with full vision, but starting in his teenage years, his sight began to degrade from the outside in. Soon— but without knowing exactly when—he will likely have no vision left. Full of apprehension but also dogged curiosity, Leland embarks on a sweeping exploration of the state of being that awaits him.

A Must Read for Everyone

Leland's compelling memoir is a must read for all of us. His research and historical insights provide a fascinating context for how we view and understand blindness in society. His courage in taking us inside his thoughts, feelings, and actions during his declining visual acuity is gripping. This memoir shines a light on the dangerous exclusivity of ableism. As society faces 21st century challenges, this book reminds us that we cannot afford to exclude anyone's contributions.
