Story
Years ago, the day before Ellie moved from Georgia to California, she and her best friend, Nolan, sat beneath the Spanish moss of an ancient oak tree where they wrote letters to each other, and sealed them in a rusty old metal box. The plan was to return 11 years later and read them. But now, as that date arrives, much has changed. Ellie, bereft of the faith she grew up with, is a single mom living in a tired apartment trying to make ends meet. Sometimes she watches television to catch a glimpse of her old friend - Nolan, now an NBA star, whose terrible personal tragedies fueled his faith and athletic drive in equal measure.

The story was very painful to listen to at times. Tragic in many situations. The deaths of loved ones was difficult to hear. I was concerned for a negative ending. I'm happy that I was wrong. Writing and storyline were impressive. Narrator was excellent!

Story
Victorian London was notorious for its pickpockets. But in the country houses of the elite, gentleman burglars, art thieves and con men preyed on the rich and titled. Wealthy victims—with their pride and reputation at stake—would never go to the police. What they needed was a society insider, one of their own, a person of discretion and finely tuned powers of observation.

Loved this beautiful story & narrator is amazing!
Reviewed: 08-22-23
I'm so glad that I didn't read all of the mean reviews about the narrator until I finished the story and was about to write my own. She is the reason why I kept reading. The very beginning of the story was boring, and I kept listening because her voice drew me into the characters. I loved the tone of her pretty voice. Loved that she spoke faster in the excitement, and then I was hooked! This is one of my favorite books, partly because of the beautiful narration. I usually don't read this genre. I loved the wonderful descriptions of the countryside and especially of the gardens detailing types of flowers. This was a very beautiful story of a family, sibling greed, integrity of friends, and...love.

Laura Dern and Diane Ladd always had a close relationship, but the stakes were raised when Diane developed a sudden life-threatening illness. Diane’s doctor prescribed long walks to build back her lung capacity. The exertion was challenging, and Laura soon learned the best way to distract her mom was to get her talking and telling stories. Their conversations along the way began to break down the traditional barriers between mothers and daughters.

I loved this audio book. Loved listening to their actual voices. It made me wish I could have had this experience with my own mother. Maybe I can talk one of my daughters into this. Going on walks and sharing our lives openly with no judgment. Thank you for doing this. So glad that the walks helped with her illness
