ある朝、オシャベリ姫は両親の王様とお妃様におしゃべりを初めました。
「お父様お母様、昨夜は大変でしたのよ。あたしがひとりで寝ていますと、黒ん坊が寝床のところへ来まして、わたしに短刀をつきつけてきたのです」
「それから、二人の女中が機織室で糸を紡いでたから中の様子を見ますと、壁に一列ずつ沢山の蜘蛛がズラリと並んでいるのです」
王様はお驚きになりましたが、どちらも夢の話だと分かると、王様は大層腹をお立てになりました。
「この馬鹿姫め。お前みたようなよけいな事をオシャベリする奴はいない。そんなことをオシャベリしたら石の牢屋へ入れてしまうぞ」
「いいえ。これからが本当なのです。今までのは今度の本当におもしろいお話をするためにお話ししたのです」
そうしてオシャベリ姫は又お話を初めました。
「女中に、今お話しした二つの夢のお話しをしてきかせました。二人の云うことには、何でも短刀と蜘蛛の夢を見るといいお婿さんが来ると、みんなが云うのだそうです。けれども、夢を見たことが相手のお婿さんにわかるとダメになるのだそうです。ですから女中は私に、その夢のことを誰にも云ってはいけないと云いました」
「まあ、お前はほんとに馬鹿だねえ……ナゼそんな大切な夢をそんなにオシャベリしてしまうの」とお母様のお妃は残念そうに云われました。
ところへ、女中が二人揃って姫の前に来ましたので、王様は夢の話を尋ねられました。女中はびっくりして答えました。
「いいえ。お嬢様は夢のお話など一つも私達になさいません」
王様はオシャベリ姫をぐっとお睨みになりました。
「お前の云うことはみんな嘘だ石の牢屋に入れてやる」と王様は大層腹をお立てになって、とうとうオシャベリ姫を石の牢屋に入れておしまいになりました。
オシャベリ姫は石の牢屋でオイオイ泣いていましたが、「ニャー」と云うやさしい猫の声がきこえました。猫は「こっちへいらっしゃい」と云うようにふり返りながら、ソロリソロリとあるき出します。オシャベリ姫は猫に付いていくと、やがて真赤なお天道様がピカピカと照らす森にやってきました。
間もなくうしろから二人の百姓の夫婦らしいものが出て来て、オシャベリ姫を指しながら話を初めました。
「クイッチョ、クイッチョ、クイッチョ、クイッチョ」
「ピークイ、ピークイ、ピークイ、ピークイ」
コハ如何に……それは人間の姿をした雲雀の国でした。
夢野久作
