In his final weeks in the White House, however, Grant faced a crisis that threatened to undo his life’s work. The contested presidential election of 1876 produced no clear victory for either Republican Rutherford B. Hayes or Democrat Samuel Tilden, who carried most of the former Confederacy. Soon Southern states vowed to revolt if Tilden was not declared the victor. Grant was determined to use his influence to preserve the Union, establishing an electoral commission to peaceably settle the issue. Grant brokered a grand bargain: the installation of Republican Hayes to the presidency, with concessions to the Democrats that effectively ended Reconstruction. This painful compromise saved the nation, but tragically condemned the South to another century of civil-rights oppression.

Setting it straight

Grant is the most under appreciated president. Mr. Bauer does a fantastic job of setting the record straight. Although I have read Grant by Ron Chernow, Bret goes into detail in many new areas with interesting stories. His narration is also superb

Bret Baier Hits Another Home Run

This is the second book on a president that I have listened to from Mr. Baier. As in the past he does it perfectly. His book on Eisenhower was just as enthralling. This is a story that is perfect for our time. Regardless of your political view and your view of the current situation in the United States this book will give you a great insight on what real leadership is. In my opinion, leadership has been sorely lacking in our government for a number of years. In light of our current situation it's pretty obvious that it is very lacking now. I have always loved American history and where the interesting twists and turns that the political environment we have here takes us. If you are interested in political history or just like to read about great leadership this book is an excellent choice.

Great book

I learned tons of great things about Grant that somehow my US History prof managed to skip over.

Very eye opening

Many author narrated audiobooks fall short in the reading authors ability to achieve story line detail and draw the listener in to want more.
Having read all of BBs books as author and narrator his success is remarkable. As a history buff this book to me opened my eyes more to Grants good successes than those failures during his presidency. Great book!!!!!!

A GREAT history lesson UNLIKE CRT!

This is History relived and has an accurate account of General Grant! We should make it mandatory in our school system.
