A comprehensive, theological guide to everything the Bible has to say about spiritual warfare.

Many Christians today are unaware or skeptical of the reality of Satan and the role he and his demonic hordes seek to exert on our lives. But if we're to take Scripture seriously, we can't overlook the biblical assertions about the spiritual battles between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of the devil.

The truth is that believers in Jesus are certain to encounter men and women of all ages who are oppressed, tormented, and tempted by demonic powers. In Understanding Spiritual Warfare, theologian and professor Sam Storms confronts the reality of the spiritual conflict in our midst, the threat of the demonic, and how we, as Christians, can respond to such a threat in our own lives and in the lives of others.

Storms explains the biblical teaching on spiritual warfare and shares numerous personal accounts of victories over the demonic, answering question like:

  • Who is Satan and his demons, and how do they act?
  • Can a Christian be demonized?
  • How does the authority of Christ defeat the devil and the demonic?
  • What is “warfare prayer” and how can we wield it?

Perfect for any individual or group who wants to grow in their understanding of spiritual warfare, Understanding Spiritual Warfare also serves as a training manual for a ministry of deliverance and inner healing.

I think the content of the book is helpful—I’m learning so much from it, and it’s causing me to rethink some of my previously held ideas about spiritual warfare and deliverance. However, this is a case where it would be better to buy the book version than the audio.

First, I would prefer if Storms had read the book himself—the cadence of his writing lends better to his personal delivery, and I like his voice.

Second, it becomes very difficult to follow the content at times (especially while driving), and I lose the train of thought because of all the interruptions by scripture references. This requires a lot of extra work from the listener on a subject that is already delivered in a very academic way. I think for audio purposes I would prefer to leave the scripture references as annotations since you cannot just skim over them or reread the paragraph to remember what he’s talking about in the first place—and you definitely cannot look them up while driving or doing whatever else you’re doing while listening to an audiobook. I understand why they are there—but it detracts from the content in this format.

The testimonies weaved into the book are the most enjoyable to listen to—they are engaging snd uninterrupted in delivery. I would like to share them with my husband—but I know he wouldn’t be able to get through the rest of the audiobook.

I’ll probably buy this book also and reread it to fully digest the material.

Further—I would love to see another version of this book made available as a practical guide to ministry, including where to go for in-person experience and training resources. There is so much other material out there, that it is helpful to see someone in action who takes a balanced approach, and not many churches are operating in this kind of ministry.

Great content - read the book
