An Instant New York Times Bestseller!

Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers and Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley are back in the next Lynley novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth George.

When a police detective is taken off life support after falling into a coma, only an autopsy reveals the murderous act that precipitated her death. She'd been working on a special task force within North London's Nigerian community, and Acting Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley is assigned to the case, which has far-reaching cultural associations that have nothing to do with life as he knows it. In his pursuit of a killer determined to remain hidden, he's assisted by Detective Sergeants Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata. They must sort through the lies and the secret lives of people whose superficial cooperation masks the damage they do to one another.

-Elisabeth Egan, The New York Times

“Superlative . . . This is a memorable addition to [the Inspector Lynley] series.”
Publishers Weekly (starred, boxed review)

“Abso-bloody-lutely” good! That would be DS Barbara Havers’ verdict on this one. . . . An unsettling and thoroughly involving narrative.”

I'd grown quite weary with Lynley's constant misery. Thus, it was refreshing to have Deborah St. James and Winston Nkata as lead characters. Tough subject, but one more people should know about. George's research is apparent and I applaud her for her courage. I almost always enjoy her writing.

A difficult topic handled well

but the narrator was really dull and plodding for the entire first part it wasn’t until Lynley Havers and Winnie showed up did he actually begin to be easy to listen to.. it’s a convoluted plot but quite good .. am i the only one hoping Diedre is gone?

maybe it’s me

Narrator was superb. I have read and enjoyed all of Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley novels and this one is her best.

Best one yet

I just love Simon Vance’s performance. He is terrific. It’s a big, big job telling a story with all those characters, nuances and voices. He is excellent and makes Elizabeth George even better than she already is! Thank you Ms. George and thank you Mr. Vance.

It makes a big difference who tells the story

I love this series. Halfway thru the story I was absolutely sure I knew the killer and of course I was wrong. Can’t wait for the next book!

Great story as always!
