Историю возникновения сборника "1000 и 1 ночь" старинная арабская легенда описывает так. Когда-то жил-был злой и жестокий царь Шахрияр. Он каждый день брал себе новую жену, а наутро убивал ее. Скоро во всем городе осталась лишь одна девушка - Шахразада. Отец отвел ее во дворец царя и простился с ней, обливаясь слезами, так как думал, что больше не увидит ее живой. Но, к счастью, он ошибался.
Так как царь Шахрияр не мог спать по ночам, Шахразада предложила царю рассказать ему сказку, чтобы ночь не казалась ему такой длинной и скучной. Шахразада начала рассказывать сказку, и она была такой интересной, что царь и не заметил, что за окном уже стало светать. Царю было очень интересно узнать, чем же закончится сказка, поэтому он не казнил Шахразаду и, как только стемнело, опять позвал ее к себе, чтобы она продолжило рассказ. Так повторилось и на другую и на третью ночь.
Тысячу ночей, почти три года рассказывала Шахразада царю свои волшебные сказки, а когда наступила тысяча первая ночь и она окончила последний рассказ, царь сказал ей, что не казнит ее, даже если она не знает больше ни одной сказки.
