He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away: a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than 50 years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life - like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963 - turning on a dime.
Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession - to prevent the Kennedy assassination.
So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world - of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading, eventually of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful - and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

Amazing story
I have never listened to Stephen King's books because I don't like horror stories. I knew he was a good writer but I did not realize how good a writer until I listened to this book. Not only was this an amazing story but it was so very well written. I grieved for Jake and Sadie.

Awesome!
I haven't read Stephen King in years because I felt even though he is a fantastic writer, his style was just too gory and frightening. I took a chance when I read the summary and I was not disappointed. WOW! What a wonderful premise that is well written, exciting, gripping and unpredictable. The violence that was in the book was within acceptable limits for someone like me who doesn't like books that make me overly uncomfortable. It was all part of the story and very tolerable. The narration was superb and I just couldn't stop listening. Well worth the credit! Great book!

Stephen King is a genius. His ability to create amazing stories, and emotionally resonant characters continues in this one. My sense of awe at how his stories all overlap with each other defies explanation. The dark tower is at the center.

Excellent narration
Narration was great! I enjoyed *most* of the story. There were parts that I found really boring, so I fast-forwarded through ... probably at least an hour’s worth ... and I don’t feel as if I missed anything relevant to the story.
