Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Great story and another great narration from Ray P

What made the experience of listening to 14 the most enjoyable?

A well written fun and interesting story, with decent character development and thickening plot. Waiting for the next installment.

Which scene was your favorite?

The first moment they realized what was in room 14. Rocked it!!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The universe with a twist of the door knob.

Any additional comments?

I will try any book narrated by Ray Porter, but his Joe Ledger is still by far my favorite.

Excellent Book!

What made the experience of listening to 14 the most enjoyable?

Ray Porter did an amazing job with this book. Very cool story with a cool array of characters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

The author did a fantastic job of giving each character a moment of coolness and plenty of good scenes to go around.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Scooby Doo and the gang with NO f'n scrappy!

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this book and found the mystery part very entertaining. It's kind of en vogue to use Lovecraft and Clines does so without infringing on the originals. Old meets new, loved the style, cast of characters, and the humor.

I can't say enough about Ray Porter in this book. He did an amazing job with each character. The story reminded me a little of John Dies at the End, in as far as the characters and how shit just happens, but they all just rolled with it.

Fun sci-fi / fantasy mystery.

Any additional comments?

I enjoy when a book knows its audience. All the little winks and nods to sci-fi, fantasy, geek and pop culture don't feel forced. It feels like references and conversation you would have with your friends. Each character has their own dreams and skills, and they share a common lack of funds and an odd living situation. I should caveat when saying "knowing your audience" that most people have categorized this as sci-fi, and while it is about sci-fi it is really more fantasy. The exact means and methods of the weirdness is not the point, it is a plot and character driven story, and the building is definitely one of the characters. Packed with mystery and thrills 14 is a lot of fun.

Awesome audiobook

I got this book because of the review. On my 4 hour ride home I slowed down to make it a 5 hour ride so I could hear the ending.

Not to much love drama but just enough, great surprises around every corner without dragging out the plot. The narrator was very good.

Awesome Ride All The Way Through

Would you consider the audio edition of 14 to be better than the print version?

I don't have time to read so I couldn't tell you if the written version is better. I will tell you I really enjoyed the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Xela - She is funny and witty. She had me laughing out load

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

Tim was my favorite, but Mr. Porter does a great job with them all.

Any additional comments?

It's a strange book, but it will hook you. Ray Porter does a wonderful job narrating. I am now listening to Peter's other books Ex-Heros and Ex-Patriots.

Well played Clines, well played.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, it isn't an overly long listen as far as audiobooks go and it kept me engaged most of the way through.

What did you like best about this story?

I thought I had the twist figured out but what happened towards the end, I didn't see that coming.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

Tough call, Porter did a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life. A lot of times it can be hard to believe the male narrator when they are acting as a female character. This is not the case with Porter, he did a great job with each character, employing their various accents and charactistics to make them feel like individuals, not just the next person in the dialogue. If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Veek. Her sarcasm and general disdain for everyone around her is off-putting at first but by the end of the story I grew to like her a lot.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were a couple of "holy s**t" moments, but this isn't an overly emotional story. There was one specific moment where Veek and Nate where having a conversation that I actually laughed out loud, again all due to Ray Porters delivery.

Any additional comments?

A little bit supernatural, a little bit thriller, a little bit sci-fi, this book takes ideas from a bunch of different genres and does a wonderful job of merging them together. I've never read/listened to anything by Peter Cline before. I enjoyed this story immensely, but more than the story telling and writing, I think it's because of the narration. I really cannot give Ray Porter enough credit here. My favorite audiobook of late is Ready Player One (what can I say, I'm a product of the 80's) mostly because of Wil Wheaton's narration, and I would put Ray Porter right up next to him and I look forward to the next book I pick up that is narrated by him.
