Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

"A wholly original story that weaves together mystery and the apocalypse like a finely tuned band." (Evan Roy, Bricks of the Dead)

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Looking forward to the sequel.

What made the experience of listening to 14 the most enjoyable?

The reader is as good as it gets. Each character is given their own voice so it's easy to keep track of who's talking.

What did you like best about this story?

If Lovecraft were alive today and if he was a fan of X-files, Lost and Josh Whedon shows, then he might write a book like this.

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked the tour of the catacombs, but there were a lot of highlights.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

No

Worth a listen!

Tl,dr: I recommend this book to any horror fan, from scifi-horror, to mystery novel, to action adventure, 14 has the chops to transition smoothly between them all as easily as walking through a door.

Clines writing in 14 is great. The characters are believable, relatable, and have a depth to them most writers reserve for the protagonist alone. Tim was by far my favorite character. 14 kept me wanting to drive into town for work supplies more often just so I could listen more.

Porter's narration is great here. Enough inflection on each characters voice to give them life without making a caricature of them. That's not easy to do for a sole Narrator. I typically prefer fully cast performances with production, like the NoSleep Podcast and others have brought to the horror world in recent years, but when I'm listening to narration at this skill level I forget that it's one man on the mic. Bravo Ray.

Amazingly weird!

This was the craziest book I’ve ever listened to. Dead Moon was crazy, but understandable. Predictive even, but still very good.
14, however, took me for a ride of awesome craziness!
So many jaw drop moments.
So many rewinds to listen over and over due to awe and confusion and amazement.
I absolutely loved this book.
Ray Porter never disappoints.
I only bought this book due to being narrated by Ray Porter, to be honest.
But now Peter Clines is becoming a regular for me.
Well done Mr. Clines. Very well done.
Thank you Ray Porter for bringing this book alive with such unmatched talent.
I would recommend this book to any adult. (A little bit of harsh language.)
I will absolutely listen to 14 more than a few times.
Paradox Bound is another great read.
Great team-up by Clines and Porter!

Keeps you on the edge of your seat

Very enjoyable listen. A solid SciFi story with lots of twists and surprises that really keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Ray Porter's style was a bit stilted at times - which may have been intentional - and it works for this book. Solid performance.

Scooby Doo meets Lovecraft

This was a very fun ride. I often found myself listening for a few more minutes after I stopped the car. So I was clearly engaged.

The performance was extremely easy to listen to. Ray Porter differentiated the people nicely so that it was never a concern which voice that I was hearing.

great overall

the only thing I would change, bc I'm a bit picker, would be the sex scene. it seemed out of place for the rest of his writing style. Also the narrator had a couple of voices that became annoying

Page turner

I couldn’t start the book after I started. The book consumed me over the four days I read it.

not as thoroughly brilliant as the fold, but nonetheless worth reading for the excellent pacing and prose
