Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Editorial Review

If you love a good mystery and are even remotely interested in sci-fi or horror, 14 is the perfect escapist treat, and listener-favorite narrator Ray Porter is at the top of his game in this performance. Plus if you loved LOST like I did, this book will help with those withdrawals you're likely still experiencing (just me?)Sam P., Audible Editor

Rarely A Dull Moment

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. I would especially recommend this to anyone who enjoys sci-fi.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?

The book really surprised me with its epic-ness.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I think this book would lose too many of its details and nuances as a film. Too many layers for a film.

Any additional comments?

If you like sci-fi then give it a listen. Or even better, read the actual book. I kind of wish I had read it instead of listened to it. I know I would have been glued to the pages in a reading binge.

I can't wait for more

I was careful to be vague and not give away any spoilers. The book started off a little slow but after getting into the meat of the story it was great. The character development was great and you started to care for each of the main ones and dislike others. This story reminds me of the mystery of the TV show Lost. You are always wondering what the purpose is for each of the strange findings. I can't wait for the sequel.

I really liked it!

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

Fun not expected

What other book might you compare 14 to and why?

Stephen King, Revival

Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Moved? No, but the references to Scooby-Doo were fun

Any additional comments?

It was very refreshing to hear a good story, from a new point of view. I really liked this book, not expecting very much.

Very interesting book.

I thought this was a very good book. The author did a great job keeping the reader/ listener interested and the plot twists were surprising. Ray Porter did a fantastic job connecting the listener with the character. Overall a great book and one I would Highly recommend.

unexpected

The narrator is wonderful. His performance enhances the story. In some ways this was completely unexpected. I was a bit disappointed in the "bad guy". seemed kinda trite.

Didn't want it to end!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes it was a great mystery and the answer was not really where I thought it was going so that's always good when the author can surprise me like that.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nate and Tim.

Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?

All of them were great.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A strange building, with an even stranger purpose.

Absolutely Amazing!

Where do I begin. The story had me entranced from the very beginning. The characters we well developed likable and relatable. The narration was top notch which is to be expected from Ray Porter. This was an unexpected treat for me. I don't usually go for the thriller horror type books but I'll be damned if this wasn't one of the best books I have ever listened to.

Ray rocks again...

Ray Porter always delivers a great performance. I personally don't prefer sci-fi, but enjoyed this through the end.

Pretty good book

A bit of a slow build up, but overall a good story. I got pulled out of the story a little at the reveal of what was in apartment 14, kind of farfetched, but story moved past it and I enjoyed it. Narrator great at differentiating voices of characters.
