I always knew that the dumb bewildered puppy persona that Alan so brilliantly projects was a mask for an acute, sensitive, powerfully intelligent and insightful mind, but nothing prepared me for such a tour de force of writing, for what is destined to become an instant classic. Tender, funny and unusually inspiring (David Sedaris)

One oft repeated speculation about comedians is that their "otherness", as children, led them to take on the mantle of class clown in order to deflect bullying. Beautiful, poignant memoir

Alan Davies memoir is beautifully written. The whole book is as evocative as any well written poetry. At times difficult to listen to, but so necessary and well worth the emotion. The whole book is a deep reminder of what it is to be a child, a sibling, a father, a mother, and the complexities of being a human being. As far as his reading, I could listen to Alan Davies speak all day about anything. Highly recommend this book to anyone. I will be buying this book in print as well!

brilliant, poignant, well written

a superb book, told with candor and simply... I related to his journey (much of mine being very similar) . l appreciate how my compassion and admiration for this amazing man can possibly mean that I can view myself with compassion and admiration too... I have admired Alan Davies's work over the decades, without any knowledge of what lay in his past. I respect him even more. He has an amazing turn of phrase... he could even be accused of literature ( a reference to a Terry Prachett quote)
