The main characters dialogue

The story is clever, touching, romantic. And the performance of the narrator is excellent. I highly recommend it.

Charming and sexy

Definitely my favorite of the series. The banter between the MC’s is well written and there’s lots of light hearted jokes and highjinks. Love an MMC who is serious and devoted from the start being constantly put in hilariously awkward situations.

What stood out? As usual, absolutely everything.

At this point, I’d just be repeating myself from what I’ve written about other Julie Anne Long’s stories. She’s a powerhouse when it comes to every aspect of writing. So this time I’ll add a new component of where I believe she is masterful: the art of banter. This author is the queen of banter. Her dialogue reminds me of the intelligent quick-witted favorite movies like His Girl Friday, or the Philadelphia Story. She knows that what is not said is equal in power to what is said. She has the ability, as I’ve mentioned before, to slow down time within a scene, and within that bubble of time, fills it with tension—sometimes exposing the raw truth of a person and always ratcheting up desire—all in service of her endgame which is match-making. What her characters find interesting in each other’s words is the same thing we love as readers; we all want to be surprised by what others say—be us real or fictional.

And it’s not just what two characters say to one another, it’s also the game of chess or strategy they play; a volley and a keeping of score (an analogy that is made in this story), where questions lead to honest truths and expose one’s own soul as well as the other’s. There’s also a belief that characters can be attracted to a person’s interior versus exterior, regardless of one’s station.
